Liked Kefalonia, would we like Zante?

Last year we spent a week in June in Lassi in Kefalonia, and loved the whole experience. Scenery, beach, eating out, etc. We like to try different places, so are thinking about Zante, again in June. We're young 50s, like self-catering or B&B, so as to eat out a lot, some bars but not banging nightclubs, lazing around in the sun, strolling around or exploring by car. Any thoughts about where we might like best, given our experience of Kefalonia? Or is it so different, we'd be disappointed?

I'd say go back to Kefalonia, last time* I went to Zante I was very disappointed how commercial it had become (compared to the much quieter place it was 10 years previously). Any place that has touts outside the restaurants haranguing you to go in is to be avoided IMO. (and yes I understand they have cut back on that but that still shows how built up it has become)

* and that was about 10 years ago so its probably even worse now, there wont be less "development" now will there?

We've been to Lassi a few times and enjoyed it too. Zante is different to Kefalonia but we have never been disappointed. We're the same age group as you and stay in Kalamaki. There are a wealth of restuarants to choose from and bars too and all on the main road or along the original part of the resort. There are some good places to stroll without touching the main road. The main difference is the beach as its protected due to the turtles so no water sports in Kalamaki but there are other beaches. I do prefer Makris Yialos beach in Kefalonia but then again there are more pools around the resorts in Zante. Not stayed at another resort on zante so can't comment on how good or otherwise they are. We do hire a car and there is some lovely scenery and some great beaches around vasillikos. We stay in a great hotel on B & B just off the main road so you can enjoy the nightlife but wander back to the peace and quiet of the hotel terrace. The hotel is listed on this site as the number 1 in the resort.

Always difficult giving advice when we are all so different but we love both places and the best advice is give it a go and who knows you may well find yourself torn between the two. Zante suits us very well and the hotel is the best we have found on many a greek island.

I can't say that i've seen that many PR's on Zakynthos apart from in Laganas. You may have the odd waiter stood at the door of the restaurant asking you would you like to view the menu but nothing in your face or offensive, well maybe one person in Argassi.

Vassilikos is definately your more greek quiet little resort along with Keri, Aghios Sostis is also a lovely little resort which has a nice mixture and not to built up or loud, Alykes/Alykanas is another nice spread out resort thats not to built up, Argassi is quite a small resort but a bit more modern, Tsilivi is a vast resort for all ages spread out along the coastline, Kalamaki is a very couples/family friendly resort with a modern and old part to the resort which has something to suit everyone then you have Laganas which is your clubbing resort.

The island is so nice towards the north and west so a car ride is a must and stop off along the way in a little local village or fishing port.

I think that if you were to visit anywhere again after 10 years away there would be changes as thats just the way of the world and progress, we may not like it but it happens.

Hi Ian

As you can see...I am from the same neck of the woods as yourself. And also spent a week in Kefalonia last June.In Skala though,we had not been since 1993 but we loved it.Also we have stayed at Lassi before.

Although we are lucky enough to have a few holidays a year, we make sure we spend at least a week in Zante, so the chances are if we like both you might too.

Just be careful on the resort that you pick,we have stayed in Kalamaki lots of times and also stayed in Alakanas, both are very nice laid back and not too commercialised.

Should you need any help on where to stay or info please feel free to send me a message and I will only be to pleased to help.

Some useful replies, thanks, does anyone know if Kalamaki suffers from aircraft noise being so close to the airport?

A little but there are no night flights, and most people seem to enjoy plane spotting.

We stayed at the Kalamaki Beach Hotel once right under the flight path and it was no trouble at all.

As lyn said it is a amazing site to see when they come in to land but they have kept the hotels far enough away from the flight path, first flight lands 6am last flight to take off 10pm so flight times aren't even a problem.

I have to admit Tsivili is not my cup of tea. I have only been for the day, never stayed there, so it is hard to say why, except I didn't like the beach much it seemed very narrow and a lot of sunbeds.

I also do not like Laganas much, but I love the Island it is beautiful.

I've been to Tsilivi a few times and again only ever seen the odd waiter asking to view menus, nothing like Laganas or Spain or Canaries. Also they have now brought in a law for PR's that they're not allowed on the pavements or roads to PR, they can only PR from within they're own premises.
