I believe that Strumica is in FYROM not in Macedonia which is in Greece. HTH.

Only someone who doesn't know history would write something like this.

Macedonia is in Greece, you probably want to say Vardarska, or fyrom as they call it.

Yes Jill T, it is true the way FIBA is naming of FYROM. However, it is certainly wrong! Actually, the official (by the UN) naming of the neihbouring country, is FYROM. Macedonia was and always will be a part of Greece, as every history book denotes, and every museum in the world testifies. (you know Alexander the Great at 330 BC? He determined himself as Greek).

Therefore, it is just definitely wrong, the naming of FYROM as Macedonia.

Of course, it is excusable for some to mistake this, as everyone cannot be a savvy of history, ancient or modern.

During the parade of world athletes at the opening of the Olympic Games in London last week the team from FYROM were carrying the country name as FORMER YUGOSLAVIAN REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA. you had to feel for the person carrying that lot!! So you would think that other sporting admin bodies could get it right!

No reason to put the thread in flames DebJP.

Naming dispute has to do with two things:

1. Greece's neigbors to the North claim ad hoc exclusive use of the term "Macedonia".

2. This is also accompannied by claims or usual irredentist statements that parts of Greece are actually "ocuppied" and should be liberated.

I would definitely overcome the claim that our neibgors are descendants of Alexander the Great and i would probably stick to the legal things of the whole dispute.

Self identification is a basic right of any human being. Nevertheless, this right has limits, as all rights do. No one is allowed to use a self identification term for exclusive use. Greece objects the use of the term "Macedonia" to define our neigbors' name, since it is considered a geographical term and not a term describing national or ethnic orign, describing a broad area split between three countries and its biggest part being Greek territory.

No one is nuts really. It's just a different perspective.

And speaking about Independence Day, someone must remember that basic ingredient of the Independence agreement was this exact naming of the country as FYROM, till the dispute is solved. It was a fair trade, *signed by both sides*; except if someone wants to go to the pre-1991 status, which for Greece would probably be of no interest and i am pretty sure of no interest to you too.

Your fianceee has every right to be proud, and i respect it; as long as it is not influencing other people' right to self identify themselves. Rights have limits.
