Best Part of Island to Base Oneself

Thinking of a 2017 stay on Chios. The southern part of the island with the Mastic Village is very interesting and appealing but it also appears very nice on the northern part of the island. Need something that has a few shops, markets and tavernas but not to touristy for off-season travel.

Use Chios town; Chios isn't touristy anyway (except Karfas, which is only mildly so).

We stayed in Karfas in June one year. We also spent a few nights in Daskelopetra, just north of Chios town. Both were handy to town, to the mastic villages, and with a car rental to the northern villages. While Karfas is considered the touristy area of the island, we found it barely touristy at all as compared to most other islands we have visited. It is a wonderful island and rates highly on my list of favourites. The Mastic villages are a must. Just south of town is an area called Kambos (Kampos?) with old stone walled lanes of mansions - highly recommended.

Crazyh,

If you have the cance to stay in the Kambos area - do it. It's a wonderfull area with small streets- walls on both sides - between the orange and lemon plantations. Great mansions- often with their own water wheel - that remember to the Genoan 14th century occupation and often build with, amongst others, local deep brown stone from Thymiana - a village next to Karfas.

The Kambos area is in short distance of Chios town and the airport.

Yes--Kambos is very nice; I've lodged there twice. The 'problems' are that you really need a scooter or a car to get there and to get around to restaurants in the area (which are very good), and things are not easy to find without detailed directions--there are very few street signs.

In the town, which some people for some strange reason say they dislike, food and entertainment (though not a decent beach) are very near to hand and easy to find.

Considered Kambos, but it does appear to be a bit pricey for me. I'll have a rental so it shouldn't be a problem getting around. Would prefer a location within walking distance of shops, markets, tavernas, etc. So still looking, have inquiries out to Pyrgi and a few other Mastic Villages, plus areas north of the island.

Chios does appear to be a lovely island, once away from Chios Town which some may like, others not.
