Whilst I feel bound to support Lesvos I think there is one important logistics thing to take into consideration with 2 young children. Lesvos is a large island, & Mytilini airport is in one far corner of the island, & Skala Eressos almost as far the other way as you can go. So the transfer, if you are taking the coach can take up to a couple of hours (by the time everyone is aboard the coach), & assuming there are no hold-ups along the way like sheep or army convoys. Only you know how your children (& you!) would cope with this.
I have no experience of Naxos, other than hearing what a wonderful island it also is! Maybe someone will kick in with info that might help you make a decision.
Hi. Have been to both..with our kids.. there are positives and negatives for both. Having said that we have been once to Naxos on route to Lesvos and liked it a lot(not Plaka, Agios Prokopios)....but have visited Skala Eressos since the 80's and every year since the kids were born-because it is a perfect place for them and us.
Skala Eressos- positives:
Huge beach, safe water
Really child friendly and just friendly...people return year after year.
Low key nightlife, but still buzzing.
Mix of tourists..Families..Greek and many different European nationalities, Teenagers, Women only, ...gives a real cultural mix.
No traffic near the beach, children are really safe to be adventurous.
Tavernas and bars on wooden platforms at the back of the beach, so you can sit day and night as adults while the children are on the beach right by you.
Open air cinema with childrens films twice a week!!
Hotel with swimming pool(Neilsons) which you can use(just buy drinks at the bar!)
Cheaper than many places as it caters for the Greek families who live and visit from Athens
Journey across from the airport/port is long and can be a struggle for some children..especially the bus! Hire car best or taxi.
Only one direct flight a week from Gat/Manch.( Connecting flights are straightforward and you can leave home in morning and be in Eressos by bedtime.)
No big water attractions.nothing like jetskis or big watersports.just pedalos and one speed boat with doughnuts etc..
Not lots to see unless you hire a car..(Eressos and Sigri sit at the end of the island)very much a place to stay put and chill. You become part of a community.
Naxos (not specifically Plaka)positives
Great beaches, warm water, safe for children in most parts.
Easy to get from airport/port to resorts.
Lots to do and see and good transport around. Experience a variety of different beaches.
Friendly people and quite laid back nightlife, but still buzzing.
Cinema too!(our kids rate the open air cinemas in Greece as one of their best childhood memories)
Possibility of visiting other islands.
Negatives. Some parts were much more touristed and quite noisy, nice for teenagers .
The Cyclades are more expensive for eating out etc, and the little costs for kids add up.eg ice creams.
We felt very much tourists rather than visitors..(others may like that!)
Whichever you choose, they're both good options. Hope that helps a bit.
Thanks! Great points! It seems that lesvis is everything we were looking for. Now trying to organise the travel is proving hard and all of a sudden the peloponnese seems very appealing. Let me look at the direct flights.thanks again.
I've been to both resorts and I'm off to Naxos again, Agia Anna (next to Plaka) in June for 3 weeks.
I wasn't overly impressed by Lesvos but, Skala Eressos was the exception, it is however a long trip from the airport. Naxos's west coast beaches - A Anna, A Pro, Plaka in my opinion are far superior and the island of Naxos has everything a Greek island should have.....only found Naxos last September after 30 years and over 20 other islands visited ....June will be the first time we have ever returned to a Greek island before.
