Hiking in Lesvos - Getting to Trails by Bus

Any suggestions for day hikes (2-4 hours) that do not require driving or taking a taxi to a trail head? Two of us will be spending about 5 days in Lesvos this July and relying solely on bus transportation to/from Mytilini. We already have a long distance bus timetable. Thanks!

Afraid you will not find it easy. Buses are geared to the needs of islanders not leisure visitors. Have you seen any of the walking guidebooks for the island - eg Sunflower guide or Mike Maunders books? They have a good variety of walks & if you could indicate which ones appeal then it might be possible to suggest the feasabilty. One excellent area is the Valley of the Mills in the hills behind Petra, which can be done as a circuit from the village or as a one way by taking a taxi up to Petri & walking all the way down from there.

But if you are staying in Mytilini I am afraid you will probably have to resort to taxis to either get you to a start point or return at the end of a walk. There are several circular walks in the hills behind Plomari, but start points are well off bus routes.

Tsipouro, thanks for your quick response! The Sunflower guide looks very useful. We're particularly interested in walks from/around Agiasos, Vatera, and Molyvos.

Molivos might be the best option - there are lots of paths & tracks around there & Petra in a book called "on foot in north Lesvos".

can only reply briefly as on poor connection at the mo.
