Pylos castle & Navarino Day celebrations-photos!!!!

Today was the Anniversary of the Battle of Navarino,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Navarino

with parades & celebrations in Pylos, some photos here,

flickr.com/photos/…

Afterwards we went up to the castle,

flickr.com/photos/…

Anyone visiting the area in October can go, it's held every year, with parades, speeches, wreaths laid & many happy & proud Greeks, British, Russians & French attending.

Great photos, Yiassas ! Alas, I missed the castle when I was visiting, and it looks very interesting. It only adds another reason for a return before too long !

Thanks for sharing !

Wonderful photos Yiassas! I'll be down to Pylos in Dec. and Jan. and looking forward to it very much!

I've done the little boat tour of the Navarino monuments twice, once in 2003 and once in 2006, and loved it both times. Especially the Russian monument, very moving. Sfakteria is also the site of a very important Athenian victory in the Peloponnesian War (the bronze Spartan shield in the Athens Agora Museum was captured there). The boat tour is the only way to get to the monuments because they are on little islands in the bay. It's definitely worth doing if you're into history :)

Thanks, Yiassas, a nice reminder to me of Pylos' charming city square ... and an amusing reminder that a national "look" still exists ... I'd forgotten this was always a multinational event, and was clicking along the pix of marching soldiers, sailors, bands etc, and suddenly, rows of "blondies" in blue -- whoops! I thought, Greeks?, and then saw the blue-stripey collars, OK, it's the limeys instead.... they were all cute of course, I love a uniform (ironic, for a Quaker, right?) .... TJ

Thanks for taking the time to share your photos! It's been several years since I've visited Pylos and Koroni... The city square in Pylos is one of my favorites, and now I'm even more anxious to return after seeing these images.
