Train or Bus from Katakolon to Olympia--risky??

We will be docked at Katakolon on a Tuesday, May 10, 2011. I am dubious about the reliability of buses and trains going to Olympia from there. Should I be? Where do I find the most reliable train schedules and info for this route, and who runs it? We arrive at 9 and the ship departs at 5.

We are hoping to avoid the ship's excursions because of the cost--nothing less than about $80 per person for just the trip to see the archaeological site basically.

If a taxi is more reliable, can I just find taxis easily when we arrive? If I prearrange one it is outrageous--135 Euros for 4 hours.

Your expert or experienced advice would be appreciated.

you have several options : hire a taxi http://bit.ly/juH90u , rent a car http://bit.ly/gT4k6f or join a daily tour http://bit.ly/n14OOf . If none of above fits you, you can certainly trust the train http://bit.ly/pRVToC

I seem to be getting the run around when I am trying to find out whether the train from Katakolon to Olympia will be running on the 25/09/2012. The trainose site will not allow me to put in those dates, so I wonder if this is now closed (out of season). There is no contact email on their site. Can anyone help me please with further contact details or info?

The trip each way will take roughly forty-five minutes and you will want to spend at least an hour exploring Olympia. There is no risk as the buses are large and comfortable with quite reasonable prices. Many taxis offer guide service but they are not licensed and some are much better than others. Guides are available at Olympia and can add tremendously to your visit.

You can see the bus stops, train station, taxi stand, etc on a map of Katakolon plus many other things to see / do there at http://katakolonews.com

generally, the buses operate almost half an hour after the first passengers leave the ship...the trip to olympia lasts 30 minutes, the stop at olympia lasts 2 hours and 30 mins to go back,a total of 3 hours for the whole trip...the round ticket costs 10 euros if you book it online, and 12 euros if you buy it at the port.

You can book your tickets online here:

From the cruise ship, I took a bus from Katakolon, run by geo-travel to Olympia for 10 euros return. The company had an office on the main street, just as you left the port gates. They were holding up boards to advertise their service. We left at 10.30 on an air-conditioned coach and left Olympia at 1.30. Journey took about 45 mins, so I had about 2 1/2 hours to explore the site and visit the museum. As a senior citizen I only had to pay 5 euros for the entrance fee to the site and it included a visit to the archaelogical museum. (Need your passport to prove age). I think it was only 5euros just to visit the site if you were not a senior citizen. On my return at 1.30, I noticed that the company had 2 more buses waiting to take people back at later times. (They must have left at a later time from Katakolon than I did). I was back in plenty of time (about 2.15) to be back on the cruise ship.

We were there in April, the train was running and the train driver asked what time the ship sailed and advised the time he would come back, so no strict timetable
