Is tour guide needed for Olympia?

we are a group of 4 on a cruise ship visiting Katakolon on Oct 01. We want to tour Olympia. Understand that we have several options for transport: private bus, taxi or car rental seem the best. Question is whether we need a tour guide to really appreciate the Olympia sites. And if so what is the best way of arranging one --either ahead of time, after docking or at the site. And what can we expect to pay for one? We'd rather stay away from a 50 person group but don't mind a 12 or less group.

Hi,

I have never used a guide to take me around Olympia. However, it may be a good idea to read up on the ancient site beforehand:

Hi MDK

I have just returned from a cruise ship with my family of 4 persons who visited Olympia from Katakolon. I don't think that a guide is strictly necessary if you do a small bit of research beforehand. I used the website below which has all the information you will need

http://www.olympia-greece.org/

http://www.olympia-greece.org/history.html

The site is quite spreadout with plenty of shade and has an excellent modern museum. The price of entry is 6 Euros for the site or 9 Euros for combined site and museum ticket.

We reserved 4 seats on the Katakolon Express coach transfer without guide online before our cruise. The fare was 10 Euros which was much cheaper than the cruise ship transfer price. I have given details in another thread about the Katakolon Express, which is the 3rd comment in the link below

You will enjoy your time in Katakolon which has a row of lovely harbour bars very close to where the cruise ships dock.

We have just returned from a cruise which stopped at Katakolon and would recommend a tour guide. You get so much more out of the trip with a guide. We booked through the ship and it was reasonable - our guide was "Study" a very informative lady who explained life in ancient Greece and the culture as we toured the site. If you book through the ship they will wait for you if you are late (we had a couple on a private tour that "missed the boat").
