Car ferry to Aegina from Piraeus - booking

Hi all,

We're staying on Aegina for four nights at the beginning of September and thought it would be a good idea to book our return car ferry from Piraeus in advance. Unfortunately the booking form requires a car registration number, which we don't have as we're hiring our car once we get to Athens. We'd being going out on the 1st September and returning on the 5th; is the ferry likely to get booked up and is there any way around this?

Many thanks.

Why not wait until you are in Aegina to rent a car?

Not all car hire companies allow their vehicles to be taken on ferries, anyway.

We've already booked the car as we're travelling around and just thought it would be easier than lugging our luggage to the port. Didn't realise that some car hire companies don't allow you to take their vehicles onboard - thanks for lettting me know about this, i'll check it out.

Hello!

If you haven't any problems with the car hiring company, you are not going to have any problems with the tickets. You will definitely find a ticket these days. Just be one hour earlier at the port.

Just wanted to add that we had no problems booking the ferry, and we just turned up early at the Piraeus and waited. The one thing i will say is that although the gates are well signposted, there is no indication which ferry moors where, and we ended up waiting in the wrong spot until a policeman helped us out. It is very much a free for all, with foot passengers and cars literally tumbling out of the ferry, which looks like an accident waiting to happen. There is also precious little shade, so if travelling from the Piraeus in the summer months, take a drink and a hat.
