choosing family resort advice

Hi

Hoped to get a bit more specific advice from those of you who know the resorts. We have tended to go to Pefkos in Rhodes over the past few years, but fancy a change of scenery in 2014, although something similar but different is what we’re after really. I’ve got a general idea of resorts but need more specific info so as to get the suitability right for us. Will be 2 adults and 3 kids (10,8, & 1) going. We’re looking at the smaller, quieter resorts, more greek feeling than over commercialised i.e. serve good kleftiko and gyro’s rather than pie&mash/fish&chips. Apartments that cater for adults and small children is top of the list alongside good restaurants for the evening. Sandy beach is a bonus.

I would recommend Troulos but none of them are resorts in the usual sense. Troulos has a good selection of Tavernas & a lovely sandy beach, Christakis bar is nice for a drink in the evening & he has a pool table & small playgound for the kids. You can easily hop on the bus to Skiathos town if you want a bit more hustle & bustle, I love it there but prefer to stay in Troulos where it is more peaceful.

Hi Eastendpar

Welcome to the Skiathos forums - I'm sure once you go, you won't look back :)

Just to answer this, "We’re looking at the smaller, quieter resorts, more greek feeling than over commercialised i.e. serve good kleftiko and gyro’s rather than pie&mash/fish&chips"

I'm sure everyone is going to jump onto this now and tell you that is all of Skiathos, it's not really commercialised like some of the other islands and hasn't been spoiled by British tourists (if I'm allowed to say that).

Skiathos Town - which is the only town on the island is absolutely beautiful and in my opinion, very Greek. Full of Greek food and grills serving lots and lots of meat and of course Gyros. It's got a wonderful laid back feel about it and is utterly charming. In the grand scheme of things it's not very big.

Apart from that you can take your pick of all the resorts, none of them are commercialised in the way you mention. It just depends how close to Skiathos Town you want to be but nothing is further than about 30 minutes by bus (or 20 minutes by car).

Personally I like to stay in Troulos as it's beautifully Green, surrounded by fields and lush pine clad hills. It's peaceful, has an amazing sandy beach but also has enough places to eat somewhere different every night for 2 weeks if required. It's one of the larger resorts but that's by Skiathos standards - lots of hotels and appartments with a few supermakets (convenience stores) along with the only petrol station outside of the town and a cash machine. You can get to town easily on the bus in about 20/25 minutes.

The more secluded and beautiful beaches tend to be on the North side of the island which you can reach with a jeep or by boat (and some you can walk to but maybe not with children) however some of the more Tourist beaches are also beautiful and in my opinion Troulos beach is probably the best of them.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion on where you should stay and you'll enjoy reading them all. No matter where you decide I'm sure you'll fall in love with Skiathos, everyone seems to!

Yes, Troulos every time, and I don't think I've ever seen pie & mash or even fish & chips as we know it in the UK for sale in Skiathos. Plenty of grilled fish, Greek potatoes, cheese pies and gyros for sale though!

Auntydiddy recommended Christakis. With respect to those who do like "Sports bars" I wouldn't put it in the same league as some of the bars and tavernas in Troulos.

The beach is very good, and it's only a short trip into Skiathos town if you fancy something a bit lively.

If you have any more questions, please ask away!

Hi.

We have visited Pefkos for 12 years running. It's our family holiday which now includes our 2 grandsons (5&2yrs). I think you will struggle to find such a family friendly resort as Pefkos.

We adore skiathos and visit there as a couple. I do not think we would take children but maybe Stalis in Crete would be more suitable.

This is only my opinion and will probably annoy some people but I honestly think there is very little to keep the young ones entertained. Our grandsons are very happy with a beautiful beach which there are many in Skiathos but I do not think the tavernas are as suitable. The play areas in Pefkos are great for the little ones.

I hope I havnt upset you by saying this. :-)

Some of us here in Skiathos would kill for a Pie & Mash shop,

But it would be us Southerners.

Us northerners like a good pie too Basil. I'm sure the Wigan fraternity that come on here will back me up! :-)

Sorry, I digress, the Green Meadow taverna in Troulos has a playground to keep the kids entertained, and my second home the Boudouriani Hotel has ample grassed area and a climbing frame slide jobby for the young ones.

Thanks for the replies, Troulos appears the frontrunner if we choose Skiathos, although have started to see the accomm and facilities aren't matching what we can get in Pefkos for the little one's for the same price. We do want a change of scenery, albeit might revert to our safe bet. Just out of curiousity slc1, where do you stay in Pefkos? We are also considering Stalis, so no offence taken.

So what self catering apartments are recommended, and what tour operators are selling these. There doesn't appear to be a huge number of Troulos holidays advertised yet, I assume they are gradually being confirmed and released so will have a greater choice in the coming weeks?

Will believe you all re the delicious cheese pies, won't try the tho, don't eat pastry here either. Will stick to the wine for my excess calories

Hi again,

For the past 4 years we have stayed at the Pefkos Beach Hotel. We always select the large studios for 2-4. These are near the pool areas. Have stayed at Pefki Island. Lindia Thalassa. Finas( worst place ever).

I would hate to put you off Skiathos because it is truly wonderful. I always say to my daughter the first chance they get to go away child free should be to skiathos. Lol.

If you need anymore advice re: Pefkos please MSG me. Otherwise we might be told we are in the wrong forum :-()

Sarah.
