Bus from Volos to Ag Ioannis?

I know that most people seem to say that you must rent a car to see the Pelion. However, my wife and I are on a tight budget so I am considering just getting a bus from Volos to Agios Ioannis. Is this practical? Once there, would we be able to get around at all by any sort of bus system or even biking or walking?

Here's the bus timetable:

You won't see much if you rely on it to get around. The terrain will rule out getting around by other means (excepat a car)

Remember you are visiting MOUNT Pelion - it is a mountain and on the east side it drops right down to the coast. So to get anywhere from Ag. Ioannis you will be going very steeply upwards on roads or tracks with lots of hairpin bends.

If you are fit and used to steep strenuous walking you could walk up from Ag. Ioannis up to the next village, Mouresi, or to Damouchari from where there is a kalderimi (cobbled donkey track) that leads up to Tsangarada but it's not a stroll in the park!

To get to any of the stunning east coast beaches you would need to get a taxi and arrange for it to pick you up later.

So do you all think it would be smarter to stay in Agios Ioannis, where accommodation seems to be cheaper, and rent a car, or stay in one of the villages further up the mountain because they sound to be more accessible to one another by footpath?

Wherever you stay, if you want to visit different mountain villages you will need a car. Whether you stay in a mountain village or in Ag. Ioannis, which is a small seaside resort, depends on your personal preference and the time of year you intend visiting.
