Cheap/reasonably priced bars

I am planning a trip to Copenhagen over the weekend 17th/18th July. We will be a group of several males and a few are getting cold feet with some horror stories of beer prices of £5 GBP +.

Can anyone suggest any central bars with cheap/reasonably priced beer? What are the best options for keeping the drinking budget down?

All help and advice greatly appreciated!

Ok, here goes with some good choices:

The Moose

Sværtegade 5

1118 København K

A small and normally crowded bar - somewhat worn out, but cheap beers, around £2.

Studenterhuset

Købmagergade 52

1150 København K.

Lively place with live music and lots of students. Beer prices around £2. Note: Tuesday is gay-day!

Wall Street Pub

Gothersgade 2

1123 København K

Real cozy, beer prices around £3 - cheaper mon-thu.

Druk

Gothersgade 33A

1123 København K

A rather small bar with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Beer prices: £4

More information available upon request :o)

"What are the best options for keeping the drinking budget down?"

I suppose keeping the consumption down is not an option? Get a few cases of beer from a shop (dramatically cheaper then in bars) and go sit in a park or by the canal (get fresh air, enjoy scenery).

It's July! Polarfins advice is the way to go. Get some bottles at the supermarket (like Netto on Store Kongensgade) for 0,40 £ a bottle and head to Copenhagens largest bar - Kongens Have (Park close to Kgs Nytorv)

The 5£ horror stories are told by the tourists who head right off the plane and down to Nyhavn for pints. They are not told by Danes or tourists who research on TA before going.

Thanks for all the great information!

I take it these prices are for pints/50cl/500ml sized beer?

What time in the evening do things usually liven up?

What time do bars and clubs typically open till?

Are dress codes generally strict (smart shoes and shirt) or casual (trainers and t-shirt)?

Are there any well known tourist traps we should avoid (other than Nyhavn)?

Generally yes... sometimes 40cl though, it can be hard to tell :-)

Closing time is often around five in the morning on fridays and saturdays. It really depend on the place and day, what time it starts to liven up. Dress code is casual in the places mentioned above. Now, I could be more specific if you gave me a little info on what you and your friends like, when you are going out (music taste, dancefloor, games (dart, foozeball....?).

In order of preference, we will be mainly looking for dance music, UK chart music and UK/US indie/rock. A fairly wide range I know! We are aged 20-30. Places with some gorgeous friendly women would be a nice bonus! ;-)

Somewhere to play pool, sit outside and watch the world go by in the day. Places to party, dance and chat in the evening.

We will be in Copenhagen from Friday 17th July 12:00 to Sunday 19th 20:00.

Yes, buying cans from a supermarket is the most economical way, this is what I did, taking them to Copenhagen's wonderful open spaces. I found the prices tended to be about 9-11kr for a 500ml can in places like Irma or Netto, so just over £1. SevenEleven shops are everywhere but more expensive. Please note - most cans and bottles inc plastic bottles of water have an additional charge called Pant added (to encourage recycling), so take your empties back to the shop to reclaim this charge off your next buy (most have automated machines)! If you are drinking outside you will probably be asked for your cans by certain people who go round collecting them for this reason, so politely decline and keep hold of them.

Yaeh, those bottle-collectors(most old, retired poeple, trying to supply their pension, alcoholics, addicts and homeless). Lately a new group has joined - refugees from 3'rd world countries living in asylumcentres or illegal) can make quite a few bucks doing this. Normally about 300-500 Dkr in a day, on special occasions up to 1000 Dkr. It was a big backblow for these poeple, when the government a few years back, lowered the pant by approx. a third.

For a normal bottle the pant is 1 - 1.50 Dkr. and normally I let them have my bottles, if they ask politely and seem nice, but that's up to everone to decide for themselves.

Mexibar on Elmegade is nice and cheapish and serves good cocktails. …dana8.dk/169-mexibar.htm (Sorry, it's in Danish!)

Øl Bar at Elmegade 2 has a happy hour special from 4pm to 8pm when you can get a large beer for the price of a small one. This is a great deal: a gourmet beer for 35 kroner, and the beer selection is often quite good. http://www.oelbarn.dk

If you aren't picky about insanely toxic levels of smoke and mediocre many of the bodegas and værtshusser have reasonably priced beer and shots, or do the supermarket option and drink outside.

Brugsen generally has good beer on offer, but the good stuff's not always chilled, and it's nearly impossible to find ice cubes for sale.
