Copenhagen to Oslo by train

We are planning to visit Oslo from Copenhagen by train.

Is it too risky to book train tickets on arrival at Copenhagen? Do these trains get filled up in advance?

Also I understand that there are DIRECT and more trains from Malmo to Oslo(without the ned for changing trains in between.) than Copenhagen to Oslo.

Appreciate your advice.

There are no direct trains from Malmo to Oslo. Minimum 1 change in Gothenburg.

The train to Gothenburg is originating from Copenhagen (Helsingor) anyway.

There is a daily overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo.

Thanks Hans for the reply. So can we board this train from Copenhagen main station or we need to go to Helsingor station?

Also are the seats in these trains Copenhagen- Gohernburg- Oslo sold out in advance or can we book them after arrival in Copenhagen?

You can board at Copenhagen Central Station.

These trains are regional trains and don't sell out. AFAIK you can't even reserve seats.

The Gothenburg-Oslo train is operated by NSB (www.nsb.no). Tickets bought on the day are 506 NOK (~34.56 BHD), bought in advance online prices start at 199 NOK (~13.60 BHD). The latter is a non-refundable ticket.

The direct Copenhagen-Gothenburg train is operated by Oresundstag (www.oresundstag.se) and price are fixed. A ticket is 429 SEK (~25.04 BHD). A more indirect possibility is to book with another operator (www.sj.se) who operates trains from Copenhagen, but not directly to Gothenburg (with a change or two on the way, takes much more time) who offers prices from 197 SEK (~11.50 BHD).

Also note that since it's only possible to buy this journey as two separate journeys, you are responsible for catching the connection yourself. So if there are any delays and you can't get to the train for Oslo in time, you'll need to buy a new ticket if you've prebooked a non-refundable ticket.

Buses are cheap (280 DKK in mid-January, for instance), but it is a long and tiring bus journey of 8-9 hours and should only be considered if you want to save money & aren´t taking a flight.

Websites:

(in Swedish only) www.GoByBus.se

or www.eurolines.com (often less cheap)

Flights: www.norwegian.com , www.flysas.com

Thanks Hans, Whisky and Joen for the helpful reply. Looks like catching the overnight ferry is a better option rather than undergjng the the hassle of changing trains in the middle of the night in Feb cold!

Thanks very much.

You don't have to buy 2 separate journeys. A ticket for Copenhagen to Oslo (whole stretch) can be bought at http://www.sj.se/start/startpage/index.form or Copenhagen Central Station.

Ah. Thnak you Hans, you learn something every day. Wasn't aware that SJ sold NSB-tickets.

A quick check shows they only sell full-fare tickets.

OP: If you do take the train connections (with the easiest one, Oresundstag/NSB) the connection in Gothenburg is either at midday (1145-1200) or late afternoon (1715-1800).
