How to Get the Most out of a Few Hours in Stockholm

We were supposed to have a couple of days in Stockholm, but airline and ferry plotted against us. The good part is that we will probably be able to return to Stockholm for a better visit in a couple years.

On 31 May we will land at Arlanda at 9:50 (no checked bags), get into Stockholm with Flygbussarna, and leave on Tallink for Tallinn at 17:45, boarding probably an hour or so before that.

We figure we'll be doing good to get in the Vasa Museum and either Skansen or the Nordic Museum. We assume any meaningful time in Gamla Stan is out of the question?

We are fit hikers with small packs, but it would be nice not to have to carry them all day. Lunch will be snacks on the go.

I would appreciate any assistance in streamlining this short day to make the most of it. What order, how long to allow for each, buses to take, etc.

Hi,

My suggestion is:

- Arlanda Axpress train from the airport to Stockholm central station. The train only takes 20 minutes, the bus will take 45 - 60 minutes depending on the traffic. The train is more expensive though.

- The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is just a short walk from the station

- Explore Gamla Stan

- Take the ferry from Gamla Stan (Slussen jetty) to the Vasa Museum. Just a short trip with frequent crossings.

- Allow at least 2 hours for exploring the Vasa Museum

- Get a taxi from the Vasa museum to the Tallink terminal or bus #76 from Djurgårdsbron and get off at Färjeterminalen. Make sure the final destination of the bus is Ropsten and not Frihamnen (clearly indicated on the front of the bus). Before getting on the bus you need to have a ticket. It is easiest if you buy the bus tickets already at the railway station at arrival from the airport, look for Pressbyrån shops. The bus takes approx 15 minutes and runs every 10 minutes.

- Skip Skansen

Forgot to mention that if you are fit and like walking it is not very far from Gamla Stan (the Royal Palace) to the Vasa museum. It's about 2.5 kms and will take you 25 - 30 minutes. It's a beautiful walk along the water (Strandvägen).

The walk from the railway station to Gamla Stan is about 10 minutes.

Thank you. That is precisely the kind of focused info I was hoping for.

I notice we are eligible for senior citizen tickets on Arlanda Express. Where do we get the tickets?

Hi,

You can buy tickets from the information- and service desk in the public area in the arrival hall (after you have gone through customs) or from ticket vendor machines. So buy your tickets before heading to the train station which is located under the terminal building.
