What are those little tickets...

I see people using to pay for food in restaurants? They seem to have some denomination on them and come in a booklet. I saw a lady use 2 marked 50 to pay for salad today and again tonight someone used them to pay for a pizza at a different place.

You probably saw "Rikskuponger", food coupons some employees get as a perk. Taxes are slightly reduced on these compared to a regular salary (the employer doesn't need to pay pension and vacation for the amount).

Should add they are mainly used for lunch and started being used widely when large companies began to stop having their own staff canteens. The system is run by Accor and is very similar to the 'Luncheon vouchers' scheme in the UK. I believe there are also similar schemes in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and a number of other countries.

The internet is amazing! Thanks for the fast replies. Interesting, these are unknown in US.

The luncheon vouchers are also very common in Finland and they have the kind of equivalent in Hungary as well. Was at least some 10 years ago.
