Visiting Gamla Uppsala and Sigtuna

Hi

Is it possible to visit Sigtuna in a day from Uppsala? How much travelling would it involve, and can it be done easily on a Sunday using public transport?

Also, does anyone know if the visitor centre at Gamla Uppsala is open this coming Saturday? Is it open on any day at this time of year? I've tried emailing them, but never get an answer.

Thanks.

Sigtuna is certainly doable. Travel time by public transport seems to be somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes. You can explore the options at reseplanerare.resrobot.se (there's an English flag to click on somewhere if it's all Swedish to you).

Public transport in Sweden tends to be arranged like the spokes of a wheel with a city as a hub. In this case, you will be jumping off the rim of the Uppsala wheel onto the rim of the Stockholm wheel, meaning there will be lots of different change points depending on which travel solution you choose. It's probably a good idea to avoid anything that involves a train-to-bus (or vice versa) change at Arlanda, as that is going to involve a certain amount of walking and getting lost inside the airport. The easiest option is probably taking the SJ Regional train to Märsta and then bus to Sigtuna, but those are not synchronized so you will be spending half an hour waiting in Märsta, which isn't much fun.

1) You can take Bus 181 from Uppsala to Vassunda, switch to bus 183 in Vassunda.

2) An alternative to the SJ Regional train to Märsta is to take the SL commuter train from Uppsala to Märsta. Then take bus 570 or 575.

Thanks for both replies: we shall look into those options. Is it possible to buy a ticket that covers the whole return journey, and is the train more expensive than the bus?

Also, does anyone know if the Gamla Uppsala visitor centre/museum is open at this time of year, on a Saturday?

I have a related question. Is it worth our buying any kind of travel pass if we have to travel from and back to Arlanda airport (Friday and Monday), as well as visit Gamla Uppsala and Sigtuna on Saturday and Sunday? We don't mind using buses if it is significantly cheaper and no more difficult. I have had a look at the UL website but am not sure whether the passes would cover us for all these trips. And is the 75kr Sky City fee extra? Is that the difference between the bus and train fares?
