Wonderful Place...Wonderful People

Just returned from a week in Gothenburg and cannot speak highly enough of the place and the people. First time in Sweden and certainly won't be the last. Had a very comfortable hotel near the waterfront (Comfort City) which was handy for both the city centre and the ferry terminal. Also, the Hagga is only around the corner where we experienced a marvelous Swedish tapas place. Can also recommend the Spanish tapas bar around the corner called Manana. Bought a travel pass which took in trams, buses and even the ferry. The ferry trip across the water was a delight and what well designed apartments and boardwalk (unlike some European cities). Also visited the Liseberg Park (great and different rides) and the nearby Universeum which combines the wonders of the deep with the rain forest. Did not find the cost of food and drink too expensive. All of the people were friendly, helpful and genuinely interested in where we came from and (nuch to our shame) spoke perfect English. Thank you Gothenburg for a wonderful trip and we will be back.

JohnboyH;

So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay, Gothenburg really is a great town to visit, specially during summer.

And so is Stockholm. And Gotland. And the region of Dalarna. And .... just meaning to say - hope to see you again!

Hope you found a place with a decent price for that pint or GT! And thanks for your compliments on our English, by the way.

I would second the comment on prices; we found that Sweden is a lot more affordable than Denmark on current exchange rate and seemed comparable pricewise with other European destinations. Entrances also were very reasonable for example (and indeed free entry in Göteborg because it was festival time).

We stayed two nights in Göteborg, having arrived by ferry from Frederikshavn and had got a great deal through hrs.de for a (lovely) triple room in Hotel Royal (next to the radisson in the ecntre) for just over 100euro incl. breakfast.

That was the hotel bargain of the holiday. The other bargain was a week's rental (through boiskane) in a converted barn in Skane for under equivalent of 400€. A LOT cheaper than the Costa Brava in August!!

I liked the vibrancy of Göteborg and the interesting 19th century architecture, appreciated even through the drizzle! Our first evening had been blazing sunshine which of course showed the city off to even better effect!

I would disagree on one point though: during our trip (2 and a half weeks in DK and Sweden) we discovered that it isn't true that everyone speaks perfect English. Once you are in areas catering mainly to local tourists you can struggle to communicate just like in other countries. Museum displays were often in Swedish or Danish only; and the phrasebook certainly came in useful for the menus!
