Christmas in Sweden

There's 4 of us, myself, the wife, and 2 kids aged 2 and 4. Where's the safest bet to see snow and experience a true Scandinavian Christmas?

You need to get up north if you want to be sure of experiencing snow on Christmas eve. Stockholm only has 50% chance of getting a white Christmas.

You can take a look at this map:

It displays the chances of a white Christmas.

Cities that you could consider are Umeå, Luleå, Skellefteå and Sundsvall if you don't want to go up all the way to e.g Kiruna.

Hi,

I agree with MrTheTraveller. You'll have to go up north.

If you want the wintry Christmas experience I would recommend to go far up north.

Somewhere around the Arctic Circle perhaps, will give you the chance to experience the Northern Lights as well.

Any preferences in terms of accommodation? Resort style? Self accommodated? Guest house etc?

Ideas of budget for the accommodation?

Kind regards

Jörgen

Thanks so much for the replies guys. We're looking for a lodge style holiday, budget for accommodation is 1000 GBP over a 7 night stay. Ideally looking for christmas markets, snow, ice rinks etc. Need to keep the kids entertained

Hmm, accommodation can be quite (or very) expensive up north but here are a few suggestions to get you started. These are more or less ski resorts but I think they will fit the bill. They are within your budget or slightly above.

Lodge style accommodation, loads of outdoors activities close by, lovely nature. I believe it's too late for Christmas markets, those are usually held November and early December.

Gällivare, very far up north. Nice little town. Not far from the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi if you want to make a day trip there.

Tärnaby/Hemavan, also far up north. Lovely surroundings.

Both of the above can be reached by air from Stockholm. NextJet offers reasonably priced flights there:

Åre, perhaps THE ski resort in Sweden. Loads and loads of activities to keep you busy. Lovely surroundings here as well. Not that far north as the others but a good spot to experience Swedish winter.

Reasonably priced flights to Östersund (quite close to Åre) can be found at:

Have you considered Jokkmokk? It is far up north but it is a lovely town that has a museum, church, tourist information, hotel, restaurant, shops, etc. It is also holds a very popular Christmas market. You can stay in the town but there are also some really nice hotels just outside the town too including some wooden lodges. Some of the lodges run excursions and you can hire snow mobiles etc from there.

Although I have only been there in the Summer I think it would be extra special during the winter.
