New to Finland

My girlfriend and I are interested in a trip to Finland. We would like suggestions that would include Helsinki and perhaps some tours from Helsinki that could make for a 5-7 night stay.

Thanks so mch.

You could take a train from Helsinki to Savonlinna. Savonlinna is a small town in the most beautiful lake area in Finland. The train takes you through beautiful lake scenery. A world famous opera festival takes place in Savonlinna every July, so it will be really lively at that time.

Two days would be enough to see Savonlinna, go for a cruise on the lake and see the Olavinlinna castle.

Porvoo is a small town on the South coast, worth a visit, about an hour's bus trip from Helsinki. You can also get there by boat along the coastline.

You could make a day trip to Turku from Helsinki by train. Turku also has a medieval castle and is a nice town by the Aurajoki river.

All these towns are at their best in the Summer.

In Helsinki, I would suggest taking a ferry to the Suomenlinna fortress, taking a picnic with you and enjoying lunch by the sea.

You can visit Kiasma, the museum of modern art or Ateneum, the more traditional art museum. The Senate Square area has got beautiful architecture and is a popular sight, as is the Esplanadi Park. You have to visit the Market Square by the sea and see the large ferries leaving for Stockholm and Tallinn.

You can travel to Tallinn for a day as well from Helsinki. The ferries are quick, it only takes a couple of hours to get to the capital of Estonia. The old part of Tallinn - walking distance from the harbour - is a nice place to spend a leisurely day shopping and having a nice meal.
