Driving via bigger roads will make the journey longer, as you'd have to drive via Muonio and Karesuando in the north (about 80 km longer drive) or via Pello in the south (ca 100 km longer drive). The route via Kolari and Pajala is perfectly ok to drive.

It's not a particularly small road either. On the Finnish side it's 80 kmh and on the Swedish side 90 kmh marked. Definitely the fastest route.

It is a small road, imho, but then so are the main roads also so it doesn't make a difference. Just take the shortest route. But it's easy and flat, mainly straight. Conditions should be ok. Not to expect snow storms that would block the road - road blocks are more common closer to coastal areas in Norway.

Speed limits don't tell much about the road in Lapland. There are very narrow roads with speed limits up to 100km/h even during the harshest winter time. I guess it's pretty pointles trying to enforce 80km/h in basically unpopulated areas. People know how to read conditions, and slow down if necessary.

Just in case keep some warm clothing in hand, a small shovel would be good to have in the trunk and an ARC membership could also be handy. For roadside assistance contact your rental company first, but copy also these numbers:

www.autoliitto.fi/in_english/road_service/

But it's customary in the north, that if you see someone on the roadside with a hood up, hit a reindeer or stuck in a snow bank, you stop and ask if they need any assistance.
