Lapland- Summer Trip

We are a family of 4 (2 adults/2 kids aged 8 & 6) planning summer trip in Finland.

We will be spending sometime in Helsinki and would like to visit Lapland in July.

Where in Lapland we must see and what we must do?

How long should we stay?

We're planning to be there towards mid to end of July.

Please let me know and thanks.

That's smack in the middle of the mosquito season. If conditions are favorable for them, they form thick clouds around their victims. The reason wild reindeer migrate has much to do with escaping these vermin.

Use repellent liberally or don't go out of downtown Rovaniemi - mossies are rare in urban environments. You could visit the Santa Claus Village just out of town and some museums without losing too much blood.

Hopefully none of you have allergies.

With luck, you could have bright sunshine or strong winds throughout your visit, either will keep the worst of the swarms at bay.

Thanks JohntheFinn.

Will 2 days/1night be sufficient or just a day trip.

If overnight, where would you suggest we (adults and kids) stay in Rovaniemi?

How are you going to travel to Rovaniemi? By plane a day trip would be doable, but otherwise I'd allow at least two days for Rovaniemi (+ travel). Otherwis you'd be spending most of your time in the car or on the train.

In Rovaniemi Arktikum (Arctic Science Centre and the Provincial Museum of Lapland) will take ca 2 hours and the Santa Claus Village about the same. In summer time there'll also be a minitrain sightseeing going around downtown Rovaniemi. Public bus #8 runs between the centre of Rovaniemi and the Arctic Circle and Santa Claus Village. You may also want to check whether the Santa Park will be open once you're there (it has got new owners very recently, so summer plans are most likely not finalised yet).

Accommodation depends whether you rely on public transport or will you have a car? If you are dependent on public transportatin, then sleep in a hotel in downtown Rovaniemi. If you have a car, you can also consider cottages e.g. in Ounasvaara.

We will have a car.

We'll be coming from Kurikka to drive to Rovaniemi.

We are planning to spend 3 days in Northern Finland, including a chance to go over to Norway.

We will do Santa Claus Village.

What are your thoughts about this hotel, as we'd like to take some excursions there too:

It's a popular place among tourists but does not really represent much of traditional Lapland (other than its location and of course the log cabins they have). The glas igloos will not be worth the money in summer as you will not be able to see northern lights anyhow due to bright summer nights. So high up in the north the sun will not go below horizon until late July.

I assume that you will most likely not do hiking in Lapland, then you can spend one night in Rovaniemi, then one night in Saariselkä area or even in Norway (Kautokeino-North Cape-Tromso) and return back to Finland via Kilpisjärvi and drive south along the Muonio and Tornio rivers and then onward south. However, this cannot be done in mere 3 days without driving at least 600 - 800 km a day.

In Lapland the distances are vast and in Norway driving is slow due to mountains.

What would you suggest we set our schedule like in Northern Finland?

Would extending it to 4 days work better or simply skip Norway and spend 3 days?

Where would you recommend we stay in Northern Finland?

My suggestionn is that if you go to Lapland in the summer, go North enough where trees don't grow and you'll be able to see fells. If planning also Norway, Kilpisjärvi is an excellent choice to spend time in the nature.

BTW there are really neat new cabins for up to 8 persons going at a very low rate during summer. Just by the lake so you'd have a possibility to swim, too. Water is a bit chillier than in FLA though.

Thanks polarbear,

What would be a better choice after Rovaniemi: Saariselka or Kispiljarvi?

What suggestions do you have for cabins on the lake?

I'd choose Kilpisjärvi, it's a leisurely drive to eg Tromso, if you choose to visit Norway. Also fell Saana is very easily accessible, the path leaves just by the rosd and doesn't require any climbing skills. Magnificient view from the top.

Thanks polarbearfin.

Kilpisjarvi sounds very, very interesting, since we also want to go to Norway.

Besides Tromso, what other towns of interest are closed to Kilpisjarvi that you suggest we visit as well?

We will arrive in Rovaniemi on August 2 in the morning. We will be staying in Northern Finland through Friday August 7 or Saturday, August 8.

Besides a 1-night stay in Rovaniemi to visit Santa Claus village and other attractions with the kids, can you suggest an itinirary that would include Kilpisjarvi, experience with Sami Culture, Lappish, visit reindeer farm, and Norway, before we head down to Kurikka on either August 7 or August 8?

We will be 3 adults and 2 kids now, with in-law meeting us in Rovaniemi on August 2 in am.

Where do we stay in Rovaniemi, Tromso, other Lapland place you might suggest?

Thanks a lot for the help.
