We travelled Sun 11 Dec returned Wed 14 Dec.
Negatives first !
Our Jet2 flight was not very festive. kids colouring sheets and song sheets ran out half way down the plane, people at back like us forgotten. No tilting of plane to pretend Santa landed on it as I read on some flight reviews. Staff not very festive and did nothing to help build the atmosphere - for us anyway. Other flights waiting to go were being given hats and xmas badges for kids
Many people not happy with Inghams whilst we were there. Some reps we were told it was their first season there, knew nothing about resort and some could not read Finnish when I needed help using laptop in reception.
Reps very staid and serious, only a couple seemed to try to make an effort for the children.
Santa trip included in holiday very commercial, we felt like we were in Debenhams. Queued for 50 mins to see Santa and once in there all you could hear was kids banging the piano the other side of the wall in the restaurant. No present given at this meeting. The baking gingerbread was purely rolling it out and someone putting it in the oven. Long queues for drinks and gifts which is the only till point downstairs. Felt very rushed. We were 20 mins late getting to pick up due to Inghams snowmobile trip that morning. Our 4 yr old was so cold and crying had to warm him up and then I kick sled him all the way back to hotel for pick up as quick as I could - 20 mins late, coach left, rep in hotel didn't really care and was expressionless. We had to pay 130euros to get to the location of trip by taxi an hour drive away.
15-20 min walk to hotel for breakfast and dinner from cabin, breakfast 7-9am. We used toboggans and kick sleds to get there. Being tied to times for meals meant we had no time to relax or enjoy our cabin. If we went again, I would have breakfast in the cabin instead.
30 min walk to Destination Lapland to collect ski hire/snow shoes/snowmobile trip. Supermarket similar distance.
Gala dinner last night - food appalling. I ended up with a plate of roast potatoes and gravy only. Santa on stage, but so badly lit, camcorder a waste of time for this special moment. When he leaves to go out of the room to his sleigh/reindeer outside, some people were outside taking photos. I got to door with our 8 yr old to find the Inghams rep with her arm across the door, she would not let us out saying Santa does not like lots of photos. When I pointed out others were outside taking them she said adults only, at which point I insisted I went out on my own. Trouble was by the time I got out, he had turned his back and was walking away, I was saddened and annoyed about this.
Log Cabin fantastic. underfloor heating and we lit the log burner a few times too. Clothes drier a boon for the wet snow suits and gloves/hats. Sauna - but no time to use it ! Beds very very comfortable and I suffer with a bad back and found them good. Two bedrooms downstairs, bathroom with toilet and a separate toilet. Upstairs, another toilet and 3 beds. Resembled narnia outside our window. Only negative was the distance from hotel for meals.
Snowmobile excursion fantastic. Was - 23 that day, so remember to wear your thermal leggings ! would not recommend this trip for younger children, several were suffering half way with very cold feet and hands, but the tour guides were superb, very helpful.
Husky/reindeer mini trip fantastic and the highlight of our holiday. Felt very emotional after the husky ride. We were at the front, no one ahead, just running into the winter wonderland.
Yllas ski slope - discovered a kids area on last day, were not given much info on this. Would have done the kids taster/teaching session and several guests wrote about it in our cabin guest book. There are areas for small children to toboggan. There are toboggans there or you can take your own on the bus. It cost around 10 euros to travel from Yllas to the ski slope for 2 adults and 2 children, each way.
Kick sled - although hard work, especially if you are an unfit Mum like me, it was invaluable to travel from log cabin to hotel.
There are postcards and a small selection of souveniers in departures at airport when you come home, so don't worry about trying to find gift shops whilst you are on holiday, some people at airport said to me the gift shops were not up to much in the Yllas area and they left it until the airport to buy something.
Other tour operators were throwing snowballs and having fun with children as they walked from coach to airport to travel home - Inghams were the ones in the main lobby like statues holding their clipboards !
Any questions, don't hesitate to message me.
Enjoy your hols everyone - and yes there is lots and lots of lovely snow !
