Best time (weather wise) for Santa trip?

We are thinking of booking Santa trip to Lapland for December 2013. After some research we are thinking of going with Canterbury Travel.

Originally I wanted to do the 5 days trip over Christmas but now started to worry about the extreme cold. I heard it was -27 at Christmas Day last year. We will be travelling with two 5 year old children and I know they won't enjoy spending all day outside in those temperatures. There is a 4 day trip 29 November - 2 nd of December which we also consider as it should be warmer then but worried about he lack of snow so early in the season. Any advice please?

Thank you

There's no guarantee for weather. It can easily be -25 already in late November, so in that respect there's not really any difference, but you'll be pushing your luck as regards to the snow conditions. You know, there's no bad (or too cold) weather, there's only bad clothing ;-) . Be prepared, get the right kind of gear (layered clothing) and you'll be fine.

And it hasn't been that cold every Christmas, either...

Zam is right. This Christmas was unusually cold but the cold front only lasted a couple of days. The next week it was almost plus temperatures. You never know, but it was a bit unusual.

Temperatures below -20C somewhat limits the activities you are able to do (or that feels comfortable to do) outside, but not all of them. Basically just things that can get you winded. In those temperatures heavy breathing is not good for your pipes. Little winded is OK - really intense exercise not so much.

Also with thick and warm clothes you sweat surprisingly easy and that is not good unless you a) can get inside soon as you wish (in a resort most likely you can) or b) you keep on moving and thus keeping warm.

But you can still go skiing etc. Just take it a bit easier. Smowmobile and husky safaris should provide you with good thermals, and with a couple of layers beneath you'll be ok. And with young kids can't stay out for the whole day anyway.

Oh, bring lots of extra gloves, hats, socks etc. for the kids! Especially if it's warmer(!) they will be playing, and they will be sweating and getting wet and you need to be changing them many times a day.
