Late Sep or Nov. Which month is better for Northern Lights?

Planning a 3 days trip to see Northern Lights in Ivalo. Either in late Sep or late Nov. As we understand whether can see Northern Lights is really by chance, just wondering what else we can do other than Northern Lights in these months. However, the priority is still Northern Lights. Thanks.

Hi! Northern lights are visible approximately 200 days a year in northern Lapland or 3/4 of nights. It is important that the sky is clear and it's dark! Best times to see them are actually early spring and the beginning of Autumn between 20.00-02.00 at night. So based on that, I'd say try to come in September.

Obviously, it cannot be guaranteed you will see them ,especially when your trip only lasts for 3 days, but hopefully you will :-) They're amazing! Hope this helps.

Yep, statistically weeks close to equinox are most likely for Aurora spotting - and in autumn that is late September. And the best time of the day is around magnetic midnight - that is about 11 pm in Lapland.

Personally I've seen the best Auroras always in autumn. Actually I can't remember the last time I've spotted them mid-winter. But then I live in southern Lapland and chances are better norther you go.

In September you can easily fill your three days visiting the most obvious destinations like Siida museum in Inari, fell center Kiilopää for some nice short hikes, Tankavaara gold village and also arrange husky and reindeer farm visits.

Very late September is ok, it should be dark enough for northern lights after 8pm, and this September it is a new moon in late September so you should have incredible starry skies and vibrant northern lights (if they do show up).

Read too much about Northern Lights.... and now im confused! Was thinking about 1 week in December dedicated to view norther lights but reviews from 2013 December have a very low percentage of people who have managed to view Northern Lights as compared to sightings in March. But again.... as everyone states it all depends on luck. Arrrgh! so confused! Which is better December / March??

March. By statistics it's just marginally better for Northern Lights, but much better for all other wintery activities (temperatures, amount of daylight, snow depth). Plus accommodation prices will be more reasonable than in December.

Thank you for your tips. We were in Inari, Ivalo and Rovaniemi this week. Thought the weather was cloudy and windy, we manage to see Northern lights for 3 nights. It was really a wonderful experience!

So happy to hear you managed to spot them! Autumn really is a good season for Auroras and this has been a good year.

On Tuesday this week we had a blackout rehearsal here in Rovaniemi. They cut the electric power from the entire city, isolated it from the national network and did some other engineering stuff I have no clue. It was to simulate a sudden nationwide blackout and how to recover from it.

Well, we didn't recover as planned, but what a luck we had still. The blackout was scheduled in the evening, iwe had clear skies and Auroras came to visit just after the blackout was commenced. It was a party atmosphere at top of hill Ounasvaara where people gathered to watch the town go black.
