Lapland - 2 night trip, which company better to travel with?

Hello,

I am looking to book a 2night/3day trip to lapland around the 9th dec. I am sending myself dizzy trying to work out which company is best to go with, as they all seem to offer different things and the reviews are very mixed (and some are quite dated reviews).

My children are aged 4 & 7 and I want the santa bit to be as magical and realistic (my son was already questioning santas existence last year!) as possible. I have priced up Esprit which was coming up at just over £2000 half board. Also looked at First Choice, but worried might be too commercialised??

Any advice/guidance would be much appreciated. Also if anybody could advise on when best to book to get best prices would be great.

It will often be cheaper to take care of arrangements yourself, as many of these package touring companies seem to just leave you stranded if something goes wrong.

As for commercial i recommend to stay away from Santa Village as it is VERY commercial and the Santa workshop there is worst, they don't let you take pictures inside and charge a hefty price for pictures that they take of you with Santa(if you want to buy them that is). Expect to spend more time dealing with a teenage "elf" about the pictures than with Santa.

I recommend Joulukka if you want a good private meeting with Santa, i have taken a family there and the kids were so thrilled over it and the setting was very good...i am taking my kids there when they come to Lapland during Winter!

As for prices December and early January tend to more expensive since that is High Season. Look into Mid/Late February as that is the slow time between the Foreign tourist high season and the Finnish tourist(skiers mostly) high season in March.

the last thing most families want, especially when doing a short break, is to sort it all out themselves, the short santa breaks can be really good and well organised, however there are some with poor reputations so do do your homework

espirit has a good rep and so does activities abroad

if you want to go for a week, then do price up inghams as you could go for a week over christmas for £2.5k but that would not include any trips - but they offer them all and at good prices, they are also a ski company so whilst they may offer all the santa stuff, they are not commercially tacky like some of the santa break companies are

Thanks for your advice. I think I would rather book as a short break so I know it is all sorted. I've never been to Lapland before and would be devastated if got it wrong or couldn't book what wanted when got there. I would have 2 very disappointed children!

I've been looking at Esprit as it appears their breaks are a little less commercialised. Can anybody recommend them??

I have not personally been on them but from the reviews I have read, they do seem a lot less commercial and they do come highly recommended here from the people who have been with them

Yes, I must admit after reading the reviews they do seem one of the better options. I'm just so scared of getting it wrong with it been so expensive and it want it very realistic for the kids. I would hate to be disappointed.

I've just been reading about Joulukka as recommened by RoutaRescue above, which sounds impressive, but I can't find any of the travel companies that go there??

Joulukka - seems like a theme park to me and if it is associated with the santapark in Rov then it may well be tacky too so do your research

Yes, your probably right. Thanks for your help. I've now read loads and loads of reviews, and think settled on going with Esprit. Your right, they do have good feedback on the whole and their trip sounds alot less commercialised. Now just sorting where I can get the best price, as it seems more expensive to book with them direct! Just got a quote off santa days today and they are a couple of hundred cheaper for same dates and she has confirmed it is the Esprit holiday.

Looks like they are only flying out of gatwick to lapland, which is too far away for us, but thanks for the heads up. A travel agent looked at Inghams with me, but although was for an extra night, would work out quite a bit more to then add on activities. Think I'm settled on Esprit. I've already missed out on the 1/12 which would have been an ideal date. Now looking at the 8th. Thanks for all your posts, really appreciate it.
