What to Wear?

Hi

We've just booked 7 days in Kuusamo staying in the Sokos Hotel and as we've never been on a winter/snowy holiday before we have no idea what to buy to wear, take with us.

Can anyone provide advice? Do we need ski jackets, salopettes, snow boots, etc even if we're not going to ski? We do plan to do lots of other activities like husky sledding, snowmobiling and sledging and hopefully more.

And, as we're staying Kuusamo town will it be snowy in the town or is just snowy on the slopes? Sorry if I see a bit dim, but I much prefer sunny holidays, we're trying something different and new this year!

And, can you just go up the ski lifts and eat at the restaurants without actually skiing? And if you do, how do you get back down the slopes?

Thank you anybody who takes the time to reply to what may seem like stupid questions to anyone who has done a winter holiday before!!!

Julie

I'm not sure when you're going to Kuusamo, but if it's in the next few weeks then I think you should take ski jackets, salopettes, ski gloves, snowboots etc as it can be very cold especially on the trips eg, if you're sitting on a sledge being pulled by reindeer it's hard to keep warm. I think snowboots are a must too although some tour operators lend them to you on arrival. Crystal/Thomson definitely allow you to borrow snowsuits/snowboots. First time we went, we bought stuff from Aldi and Matalan as weren't sure if we would go again and it was all perfectly ok. We've now been to Ruka twice and thinking of booking again for next year!

Not sure about the snow situation in Kuusamo town. As far as going up the skilifts is concerned, you would need to buy a lift pass for most of the lifts in Ruka (not sure if there are any ski slopes in Kuusamo itself) also, there are no gondola lifts, only chairlifts,t-bars and button lifts. You could walk up part of the slopes and walk back down or sledge back down certain designated sledging slopes. In Ruka, the restaurants and cafes were mainly at the base of the slopes.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much.

We're going on on the 8th Feb so really soon.

I went into a ski specialist shop today and they gave the same advice as you.

Much appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Hope you have a great time. I forgot to say in my previous post it's also worth taking thermal longjohns and thermal tops plus fleeces to wear under the ski jackets, hats and balaclavas or neckwarmers which you can pull up over your nose. Also thermal glove liners or silk gloves to wear inside your ski gloves. We were in Ruka at the beginning of Jan and it was -17 on a couple of days so the more layers you can put on, the more chance of staying warm.

Let me know if you need any more info.

There's snow on the ground also in Kuusamo town, so "snow proof" shoes will be needed there, too. However, the streets will be cleared of snow if it happens to snow, but a proper gear will be needed to protect you from cold and especially during the excursions and activities unless you've booked such that will include everything.

Long legged and sleeved underwear is a must for both sexes. Take also thermal/woollen socks in addition to thinner socks, you can wear them on top of each other to keep your toes warmer.

Thanks,

We've gone out and got ski wear, together with thermal base layers, 2nd layers, snow boots, gloves and hats.

Basically, if you might need it to keep warm we've bought it!

Thank you for your replies.
