Four days in Helsinki in February

My partner and I are planning on just the one European city break next year. We like to go somewhere different and was planning on Helsinki.

We would spend three days there, with a day trip to Tallinn.

We would love to see some snow, wander around a lovely city, drink good beer and eat nice food without spending too much.

Is Helsinki a good idea?

Snow has been sporadic these past few winters, but you're likely to see at least some during your stay. Dress up warmly while you do your wandering and you'll be fine.

Good beer, nice food, without spending too much - aye, there's the rub. Finland is not a cheap place for dining and especially wining. You would do better to split your time more evenly between Helsinki and Tallinn as prices for eating out and alcohol are considerably lower in our neighbouring country.

Make sure to time your ferry trip to Tallinn during daylight hours, which are still very short in the beginning of February. The sea is usually frozen at that time of year, and it's a magical sight as you cruise through the floes.
