suggestions for a day-bus tour?

I'll be with 8 friends who are not interested in buying a guided tour from the cruise line. Is there a "hop-on, hop-off" bus that offers sightseeing? If so, where can tickets be purchased? We will need to get from the Pier to the boarding point. Any help would be appreciated.

To be honest, the sightseeing tours provided through the cruise line and/or e.g. the Helsinki Expert (i.e. the official Helsinki sightseeing are of better quality (regarding guiding) than the hop-on-hop-off tour. Most of the cruise line sightseeing tours have a living, authorised tourist guide. On the hop-on-hop-off guiding is prerecorded that you'll have to listen to from the headphones.

Things seem to be cheaper with a Helsinki card? What is the card, where do you get it, what is the cost per person? Does it have other benefits than the hop on hop off bus? Thanks for your help.

Many cities especially in Europe have these tourist cards. You pay a certain fee and it gives you then e.g. admission to certain museums either free of charge or for a discounted price. In most places these cards include also free travel in the public transportation. In Helsinki the card is called Helsinki Card: http://www.helsinkicard.fi/

I would only recommend the Helsinki Card if you're a real glutton for museums. It's hard to make the cost worthwhile otherwise, particularly if you're only in town for a few hours as cruise tourists tend to be.
