You need to go further north. The aurora is rarely seen in Helsinki.

Lots of Lapland tour operators offer 'northern lights' outings but sightings are never guaranteed as nature has to cooperate - suitable solar weather, no clouds. For this reason I strongly recommend NOT to have the northern lights as the main focus for your trip. If you're not interested in the ski resorts, you might base yourself in Kemi, for example, where you have the Snow Castle and icebreaker cruises as well as a fair chance for the aurora borealis. http://www.kemi.fi/english/index.html

Here are a few operators for you: visitrovaniemi.fi/In_English/…Excursions.iw3

I think your safest bet would be Longyearbyen in Svalbard during the polar night.

I've also seen aurora borealis trips advertsed in Tromso.

Definitely I'd go north of the Arctic Circle.

I think you should head to Arctic... and if you don`t know it,

you can fly directly from Gatwick, London to Tromsø, Arctic Norway.

Please check http://norwegian.com

I am very keen to go with a group of friends - we are staying in Helsinki for several nights.

How would you recommend to travel up to the Northern Lights or Artic Circle - by train - if so how best are we to book from London before we go??

Thanks Giles

The aurora borealis is fickle - you simply have to accept that, on a short trip, you probably won't see it. Still, luck favours the bold.

The further north you go, the better your chances are of a sighting. Trains from Helsinki stop at Rovaniemi. You would do better to fly to Kittilä or Ivalo, for instance.

You can check out tickets at http://www.vr.fi/en/index.html
