Fussy vegetarian

Hi all!

I've been tasked with taking my Much Beloved away for our tenth anniversary in about 6 weeks time. Helsinki looks fantastic and I'm really excited about going - she knows nothing of the destination, only that she's going away somewhere.

BUT she's an incredibly fussy eater! She doesn't eat meat/fish because she doesn't liek it, rather than 'moral' reasons. She doesn't like spicy food. She will eat quite a lot of vegetables these days, but has particular loathing for celery, butternut squash, olives, parsnips and sweet potato. She loves certain cheese, but not blue, goats or feta... All very frustrating for me, who will eat just about anything!

When we go out for a meal here in the UK, we tend to stick with either Italian chains where she can pick from the menu in advance (she does love pasta!), or go to pubs/diners where she can have just side orders - fries, garlic bread, onion rings etc. I have no idea of that sort of thing is acceptable in Helsinki, but please let me know if it is!

Not looking for the fanciest, most romantic destination, just somewhere we can get a good meal and have a little private celebration. She took me to Pizza Hut for our first anniversary, so I don't have particularly high expectations of where we get to go, though her tastebuds have branched out a little more these days! We're on a budget so the other 2 nights might be fast food sadly, but one night I'd like to go to at least a semi-nice place!

Can someone please help with a few recommendations!

Well pasta is pretty common and fries available in 99% of places.

I'd try Vapiano at the corner of Mikonkatu / Kaisaniemenkatu www.vapiano.de/frame.php… Won't break you budget, but you need to wait in line to order. The domestic equivalent is Bravuria on the Narinkka Square. Website sadly only in Finnish http://www.bravuria.fi/ruokalista/ More "italian" places are Carlitos (at hotel Glo on Kluuvikatu) hotelglo.fi/en/glo-helsinki-kluuvi/restaurant

The Finnish way to order includes condiments, but some places (pub type or "american") have side orders or that type of food as starters. Try Morrison's Grill & Green http://www.rafla.fi/morrisons/en/menu behind the Ateneum Art museum/ Railway square.

_The_ vegetarian restaurants are SIlvoplee on Toinen linja 3 (Kallio districht, open luchtime only(?)) and Zucchini (Fabianinkatu 4) not far from the market place. There open 11-16, but on holiday July. But if you're coming in August, this is not a problem...

Oh, and I came up with this link byt the vegan association of Finland http://www.vegaaniliitto.fi/restaurants.html

Could try Kaarna on Mannerheimintie 20. Pretty decent food with nice prices. It's on the 1st floor overlooking one of the main streets in Helsinki, get a table by the window and see the world pass by. Mushroom filled cabbage rolls or garlic spiced smoked onion soup could suit your spouse.

Another nice place is Kynsilaukka; http://www.kynsilaukka.com/alacarte.html with a bit out of the ordinary veggie dishes.

Anyway eating just side orders or whatever will be OK in Finland. Dining isn't that formal.

Thank you both, that's brilliant! That's given me some great ideas, and when she knows about where we're going (that'll be when we're on the plane then!) I'll present her with some menu options and let her decide - that's probably the best bet! I love the fact that the city is so compact and everything is so easily reachable - nothing is too far from the hotel (Hotel Finn), and I'm so excited! Thank you again!
