Things to do on a flying visit in Helsinki

I will be travelling to Helsinki in October and I was looking for recommendations on what things to do, eating places to visit (or avoid) on a brief trip. All suggestions are welcome.

How brief is brief.

6 hours ? 12 hours ? 24 hours ?

A good transport option will be to get a one-day regional ticket, which you can buy from the bus driver if you take the 615 (NOT the Finnair bus) into Helsinki. This will cover your buses to and from the airport, inside the town, and the ferry to the Suomenlinna islands.

You're welcome. And by the way, you can only use cash on the bus. If you want to use plastic, go to a ticket vending machine or any of the several R-kiosks in the airport.

The view of the city from the Olympic tower is worth the 6 euros it costs to go up in the lift - you can't walk up. The area around Helsinki - indeed Southern Finland generally - is very flat, so you can see for miles. It's a 20 minute walk from the station, past the Kiasma.

The cathedral is spectacular from the outside, but nothing special inside.

The Kiasma art gallery/ museum is a spectacular building, depends on your taste as to whether you like what is on show ! it is 500 metres from the railway station.

The Kiasma is part of the Finnish national gallery, the Ateneum, opposite the station, is more traditional, and is what old fashioned people like me consider to be a proper art gallery :) I think you learn a lot about a country from the national gallery, it shows some of the national obsesions.

The kauppatori market area is a must.

None of these places is very far from each other, you could walk the lot in 12 hours.

There are loads of stalls at kauppatori selling food, alternatively go into the market hall.there is a place to the left selling the most amazing Finnish version of boullabaise.

Thank you for your suggestions- sounds exactly what I'm looking to do. Can't wait to soak up the Finnish culture and see as much as I can in my short time there.
