Finland July 2014

U.S. Family of 4, daughter 14 and son 12 looking for ideas for day hikes, things to do outside, meet locals. Not much on museums. We have about a week's time. Just starting search. Thanks, Greg

Do you plan to stay somewhere longer, or are you willing/planning to travel across the country?

Hello there,

If you want to get the most out of your holiday, I would recommend touring Southern Finland by train and/or by bus (unless you want to rent a car), for example Helsinki-Lappeenranta-Savonlinna-Tampere-Turku-Helsinki. There are several kinds of activities that you might be interested in along the way... Trekking in one of our national parks (Nuuksio, Repovesi, Isojärvi, Seitseminen... just to mention a few.) and experiencing the real Finnish sauna? In Savonlinna you can find the most beautiful medieval castle in Finland, and in Tampere there is for example the only museum dedicated to Lenin in the world! It's definitely worth a visit even if you are not that into museums... ;)

What is a "government registered tour"? That is for me a totally new concept that sounds more appropriate for North Korea.

Your link points to a list of "sponsored tours" which most probably just means that somebody is paying to have it listed on that web site.

Btw. "Charlotte T", you have now five postings and four of them are touting the same web site. TripAdvisor is not for advertising.

Charlotte T. what are you referring to with the "government registered tours"? Do you mean that these operators have registered themselves into the register of package travel organisers of the Finnish competition and consumer agency? That should be self-evident for any legitimate business wanting to sell tours in Finland ( www.kuluttajavirasto.fi/en-GB/packagetravel/ ).

Some random ideas: If staying in the Helsinki region and like outdoor life, you might find the Nuuksio National Park an ideal place to go to. A bit of wilderness right beside the capital!

visitespoo.fi/visitors_guide/enjoy/nuuksio_n…

Kids of all ages will love the Haltiala farm with pigs, hens, sheep and other cuddly creatures. Of course there's a nice outdoor cafeteria, too, to have snacks and refreshments.

The small Ruutinkoski natural sanctuary along the river Vantaa is also nearby. Haltiala is located about 16 km or 10 mi from the city center, and It's one of my regular summer destinations. I use to go there by bike through the Helsinki Central Park. See suggestions for bike rentals in the FAQ. For public transportation, use the Journey Planner at http://www.hsl.fi/en.

The small and romantic old town of Porvoo is only about 50 km from Helsinki and easily reachable by bus from the Kamppi bus terminal. A fine destination for a one-day trip. Among other things, all kids will insist having a visit to the Brunberg candy factory outlet! You said you didn't fancy museums but how about one on rail? There a steam-powered train going between Porvoo and Kerava (accessible with local train from Helsinki) on a few days in summertime.
