What are the best things to take back from Helsinki?

I would like to know what are the best things (souvenirs etc) to take back from Helsinki? I would be visiting Helsinki in October for 2 weeks.

Depending on how much you like to spend, you can find Marimekko and other Finnish design items such as Iittala glass and Arabia porcelain in department stores and along the Pohjois-Esplanadi ("Espa") shopping street near the central Market Square. The famous Moomin Shop is also there on Espa, a place for children of 0 to 90 years :) You don't perhaps need warm clothes where you live, but you can find many colourful and beautiful things in the Market Square. And how about a reindeer skin on your wall? For some less expensive souvenirs, I'd like to recommend the Market Hall in Hakaniemi, check the upper floor. From the ground floor or any market, bring back reindeer, wild hog, moose and other game meat. In canned format, they should be usable up to back home. Cloudberry jam and Lakka liquer made of the same raw material with a distinctive fine aroma are also something typically Finnish. With cloudberry jam, we use to have "leipäjuusto", a special kind of cottage cheese. That might be a difficult thing to take home, as it should be kept cooled. Buy some Carelian pastry ("karjalanpiirakka") and cinnamon rolls ("korvapuusti"), they won't get so easily spoiled in your bag during return.

"And how about a reindeer skin on your wall?"

It would look silly on the wall. Sorry... :) But reindeer skin still is a nice looking but also a practical souvenir. The skin is quite durable and warm to sit on, so traditionally they are used as rugs or blankets. In front of a fireplace, outdoor patios etc.

...

Knives (puukko) are also traditional gifts. Check for example Marttiini factory shop in Senaatintori square. From Marttiini selection filleting knives are of high quality. Other popular ones are their Ilves model (Lynx knife) and smaller to medium sized Leuku knives (a Lapp knife). Biggest Leuku knives are just props.

For fishermen Rapala fishing lures. Original Floater is probably their best known model.

Colourful, retro and stylish Hai-Saapas rubber boots. Never out of fashion! From the original Nokian footwear company, that later tried their luck with mobile business. Model dates to late 60's and is still in use.

For streetwear but also for serious training Karhu running shoes, and especially those classic models like the orange Karhu Albatross. That model, but with modern technology, dates back to 70's and 80's and was used by our great Finnish runners like Kaarlo Maaninka.

And of course this coolest beanie ever!

Depends of course who the items are for.

For food check out the eat &joy market at Kluuvi shopping centre basement, Stockmann delicatessen dept or the Hakaniemi market hall. The finnish berries are total superfood so grab some lingonberries, blueberries or sea buckthorn dried or as a jam..

Kids related: The Kamppi shopping centre has an Angry Birds shop & several stores selling scandinavian & european quality childrens clothing. Bookstores have the Moomin classic books & there's a Moomin shop in Forum shopping centre. Another is at the airport.

For contemporary small designers visit the design district http://www.designdistrict.fi/news

My personal favourite would be a pair of Sauso gloves (excellent quality). The Lumene cosmetics line has an excellent price quality ratio and they carry a line with Angry Birds products too.

My mom and I have been traveling around, and we haven't been picking up souvenirs (not enough space in our backpacks), but I've started "collecting" some pieces of jewelry from a couple countries we've visited. Are there any types of jewels or jewelry unique to Helsinki/Finland?

One company that uses Finnish folklore as an inspiration, is Kalevala-Koru/Kalevala Jewelry. They have different price ranges depending on the material used. Many of my friends are great fans.

And Lapponia Jewelry of course. You might find this necklace familiar. Worn by a certain Princess of Alderaan... :)
