Good location for bars & pubs

Hello,

I will be travelling solo to Helsinki in March. Looking to stay in an area that is close and within walking distance to all the bars and pubs. And any hotels near by that you would recommend as well.

Also, how is the nightlife on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays?

Thank you for taking the time to read my question.

-Tommy

Thank you Charlotte, I am checking out Finnbay now.

Is there a hotel near all the action, or a cool place in town you'd recommend?

Charlotte T, your account will be deleted if you keep up this touting.

Anywhere in the city center is within a short walk of more bars than you can shake your wallet at. Around the station is ideal. There's a battery of bars on Rautatientori oppposite the station and Molly Malone's, a fake Irish pub popular with expats, is just around the corner. If you don't find anything congenial there, head for Aleksanterinkatu where there's an arcade of bars, known colloquially as Granny Alley, favoured by a more mature clientele but amusing in its way.

John the Finn,

I appreciate your insight and hear quite a bit about Molly Malone's. Where do the locals tend to visit for drinks?

Locals visit all of those places that John mentioned. Helsinki does not get enough tourists or resident expatriates to keep any bar in business.

There are of course plenty of other venues both in the center of Helsinki and in the suburbs. Some of these bars specialize in being as cheap as possible, so they attract the people who want to get inebriated with a limited budget. These are not necessarily the kind of people with whom you like to mingle.

One of these bars is in a quite prime location in downtown: Ale Pub Kaivopiha (Mannerheimintie 5), in the block just south of the Railway Station building. There you can see Finnish youths not at their best, since the age limit for entry is 18 years, i.e. the minimum legal drinking age.

the_goodsoil_family is correct. Even in Molly Malone's, the expat element is only a minority.

An option is to stay in Hakaniemi, e.g. at the new Scandic.

Reasonable walking distance to both center and Kallio district. Kallio may be a bit livelier esp in Mon and Tue. Wed is not that bad overall, but Fri and Sat are the most popular. In general pub & bars might not be the reason why people visit Helsinki.

In the same Kaivopiha block there's another popular pub and restaurant worth recommending, the Zetor. It's crazy style interior is inspired by the old Czech tractor brand that used to be (and still is) popular in the Finnish countryside since grandpa's times, and it serves good beers and food as well. For example, you should try Sahti, the ancient Finnish beer, praised by Michael Jackson himself (the English beer guru, not the American singer).
