Midsummer Weekend

We are arriving in Helsinki from Stockholm on the morning of Thursday 19th June. We will be spending 2 nights there before flying to Ivalo where we will spend one night and then join the Hurtigruten ferry travelling through the fjords to Bergen.

This is a very special holiday for us and doing some research today have discovered that almost everything will be closed over the time we are in Helsinki and Ivalo, we had no idea this would be the case.

Can we please have some advice as to what will be open eg shops, public transport, tourist attractions etc. Thanks.

Your best bet is the open-air museum on Seurasaari island, which has a folklore-oriented programme on Midsummer Eve. seurasaarisaatio.fi/midsummer-bonfires/…

Alternatively, many of the sightseeing boats operating from Kauppatori do evening cruises to see the Midsummer bonfires on Seurasaari, some including dinner at sea. Try these: http://www.ihalines.fi/new/wordpress/ http://tinyurl.com/ps5obqr http://www.royalline.net/

Shops will be open normally (until 9 pm) on Thursday. On Friday many boutiques may be closed but supermarkets and department stores will be open until noon. On Saturday all shops will be closed. Sunday is again a normal shopping day, so at least supermarkets and department stores will be open from noon at least until 6 pm (on summer Sundays they are allowed be open until 9 pm but not all shop owners implement longer opening hours in summer as the rest of the year they can be open only until 6 pm on Sundays).

Where in Ivalo are you staying? In Inari and Saariselkä most tourist attractions are open also during Midsummer, e.g. the Nature Centre in Tankavaara will be open every day 10-16 and the Saami museum Siida in Inari 9-20. The tourist info in Ivalo will be closed during Midsummer but it will be open daily in Inari (9-20) and Saariselkä (10-16). In Ivalo/Inari/Saariselkä you can contact e.g. husky and reindeer farms in advance and arrange visits to them. On lake Inari there are also boat trips available. And the nature is of course open 24/7 ;) if you'd fancy e.g. a hiking day trip.

If you are heading to Ivalo for midsummer, try staying a night at Kiilopää, a bit south from Ivalo and Saariselkä: www.suomenlatu.fi/kiilopaa/en/accommodation/

Also going there myself next week. Checking some trails.

Update: Not going there myself this week. Looks like some wind, rain and temperatures around +2. You just got to love summer in Finland... :)

It will most likely be Pyhä-Luosto or Syöte for me then.
