july trip

We are 2 families on a self drive tour starting on 9th july and returning on 17th.

We have made a plan based on what we would like to see and do some activities.

9th july - arrive reykjavik at 11:00 am and drive to see Golden Circle (Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss) and spend the night at Hotel Fludir

10th july - visit Landmannalaugar, langjokull, myrdal, vik, seljalandsfoss and skogafoss, puffin colony...spend night at Icelandair Hotel at Klaustur

11th july - visit Skaftafell and visit svartifoss and take boat ride on Jokulsarlon lake amongst icebergs...trip to Vatnajokull glacier (super jeep ride on the glacier or snowmobile safari).

spend night at Hofn/skalafel

12th July - spend night at Eglisstadir

13th july - reach myvatn and spend night

14th july - visit dettifoss, goodafoss, asbyrgi and return to myvatn

15th july - visit snaefelsnes and spend night at hotel budir

16th july - travel around snaefelsnes and return to reykjavik in the evening

please let us know if the routing is ok and are we missing out on any interesting place

You need a 4x4 to visit Langjökull and Landmannalaugar

10 July - visiting Langjökull will mean you have to back-track and will make this a very long day. Better to drive up to Langjökull from Gullfoss on 09 July.

14 July - don't go to Goðafoss on this day; it's roughly halfway between Mývatn and Akureyri and is just off Route #1 - better to stop there during 15 July

15 July - this is perfectly driveable but is quite long - almost 500km. Allow at least 7 hours without stops.

Otherwise this looks good!

we would like to see Dettifoss falls from the east and west side. How much time does it take by car? or if we decide to hike? Are views completely different?

It takes about 1 hour to drive from one bank to the other, and the difference is like left side and right side !

You might want to ask why Ridley Scott shot the Promotheus from the east side.
