Why Golden Circle?

I've read inumerable reviews about Iceland, and even when the review is about something else it's always 'Golden Circle this' and 'Golden Circle that' and 'during our Golden Circle tour' and 'we found this lovely little cafe on the Golden Circle route'....

So 'Golden Circle' is almost like a brand that people can identify with, like French Riviera or Costa del Sol, and probably makes going to Iceland less daunting for people who might othewise be a bit bewildered about where to go and what to see. So krona-kerching for that.

But who coined the phrase 'Golden Circle', and when was it first used, anyone know?

The term ,,Golden circle" has been used for at least 40 years, since tourism, became an industry in Iceland. It relates to the most popular day tour, and since the drive is in a circle, that is not back the same way, it got it´s name. It probably relates to one of the main attractions Gullfoss, which in english is Golden waterfall.

Even though most operators drive more or less the same route, the emphasis is different, and the stops are not always exactly the same, but all stop at the three main attractions: Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. But there are at least three big waterfalls on the route, two geothermal areas, many volcanos in sight, many historic sites as well as many more opportunities to stop.

The ,,Golden Circle" is known to be the main day tour, and many (me included) would go as far as saying ,,the essential tour of Iceland" since it is a tour of all the major attractions (active volcanos, waterfalls, Geysers, and the gap between the continents, and lets not forget that it is a tour through Icelands history, geological and historic. And all of this within a day tour of Reykjavik.
