hiring car versus organised tours

Hi

we are visiting Iceland for 7 nights in November. We are staying in the capital and definitely want to see the Golden circle go dogsledding and skimobiling ,and obviously the Northern lights. Are we going to get rushed around on the tours and maybe not have enough time to explore. Is it a better idea to hire a car to drive to the places where these activities take place especially at this time of year any thoughts or advice on this please ?

If you can drive, and are not afraid of weather and getting lost, then drive, and be your own master.

icelandicguide,

your response to Welshboy was a little scary. Are you saying that someone would get lost, and how bad will the weather be? I'm asking because I also was going to ask the same question?

You are likely to experience all types of weather conditions in November just as you could expect here in the UK and you may end up doing a lot of driving in the dark, possibly after a tiring experience.

Taking the tours can be a little rushed but if you use one of the smaller tour operators (we had IG tours) they can point out many things you could miss if you drove yourself, and you can nod off if it all gets too much.

Cost factor may be a good reason to hire a car depending how many in your party and maybe a satnav would be something to consider as well.

Dewsburyman makes an excellent point, specially regarding the nice things one could miss on a self-drive.

But if you do choose to go on your own I recommend you read up a bit on the area before you head off.

Also getting lost in November on the Golden Circle is nothing new, and usually not dangerous at all (depends on the weather). It's mostly lowland country roads, paved and well marked with big bright yellow signposts. So if you plan ahead, check your map for destination and waypoint names or make sure you have the correct destination on the GPS you should be just fine, thousands have done it before. Just remember that the scenic Golden Circle is not always the shortest or fastest way, so the GPS might send you on a less scenic way towards f.ex. Geysir.

Have fun!

Thanks for the great info, it does sound like a tour for the Golden Circle is a good option for other than driving reasons. But I do have another free day that I thought would be nice to just get in a car and explore (safely) for those 6 hours of daylight. Any suggestions for end of November

We just got back from Iceland and we found the driving to be very enjoyable and easy. We did have some heavy snow once on the route from Reykjavik to Selfoss, but slowing down to 60 KM on the downslope (just as all drivers were doing that day) made the journey through the snow manageable. We loved heading out on our own, stopping when we wanted, exploring off the beaten track. We kept commenting throughout how easy and hassle free having a car in Iceland. We'd rented a compact car from Budget and we got a really nice Skoda 4x4 with studded tires. We plan to return and will definitely rent a car again to see this enchanting country!
