Snefellnus vs Southern Coast

My wife and I will be in Iceland for 6 days later in May. We're

renting a small 2wd car and are looking to figure out exactly our

itinerary should be. We're think the first night in Reykjavik, then

heading to the golden circle for a night then either heading down to

the south coast or going nw to the snaefellsness peninsula.

Our interests are seeing the amazing landscapes, hot springs in great

settings, and light hiking. We're generally pleased by days of light

driving with stops to do 2-3 hour hikes/walks, picnic lunches, and fun

restaurants.

Can anyone describe how we might enjoy Snaefellsness vs the south

coast, assuming we have 3 days/nights to see either.

If we went either route could you suggest some good options for towns

to stay over night along the way?

Much appreciated.

Definitely head south. Too many waterfalls, glaciers (to hike) and also Jokulsarlon...

I agree go south, beautiful sites and well covered in 6 days sort of within your criteria.

Many of the sites are on route 1 so not much option for 2-3 hour hikes but plenty of places to stop at picnic places (stock up in the city and Vik), not many restaurants along the route other than the very small towns, most eat in their hotels.

Day 1 - Reykjavik

Day 2 - golden circle and waterfalls, stay near Selfoss

Day 3 - waterfalls, volcanoes & black sand beaches, stay in Vik

Day 4 - lava, glaciers and lagoon, stay near Jokulsarlon or Hofn

Day 5 - return stopping at sites missed

Day 6 - Reykjavik
