How much experience do you have driving on narrow icy roads in strong winds?

The answer is NO. It is not safe to plan a self-drive trip to Iceland in winter, and March is very much winter. Tourists die on the roads in Iceland every winter.

Bigger 4wd vehicles are only easier for the wind to catch ahold of and are harder to stop due to their weight when you start to slide on ice.

I was in Iceland in mid-March this year and stuck to tours and buses (based on the advice in this forum). Unless you have extensive winter driving experience I'd advise you to do the same, or consider a trip in summer.

In winter best would be multi-day tours that include accommodation. If you do day tours from one base you seriously limit the area you can cover...

Hi all, since I'm also considering a trip to Iceland late march early april, and I'd also like to rent a camper van, my question is:

From when do you consider that is safe for someone with no experience driving in icy roads to travel to Iceland?

I have no interest in travelling during the summer because I want to at least try to see the nothern lights, plus the summer is just too overpriced for my budget.
