I know that I am counting on the kindness of strangers and I really appreciate any help you all could offer. I feel like shouting, Trip Advisor! Don't Fail Me Now! as I type. : )
I need some advice to plan a trip to Iceland at the end of June 2012. We are a family of five traveling back to the States after a year in Norway. Because of shipping costs, all our possessions will be traveling with us as checked luggage. That means ten large duffel bags.
I'd like to plan a one or two day layover in Iceland to do the Golden Circle and visit the Blue Lagoon, but I don't want to break the budget and hauling the bags around is a monster pain in the neck.
For instance, I can't just rent a car at the airport. Between the five of us and the luggage, we won't fit in anything but a bus.
Should I give up on the idea of seeing Reykjavik and the Golden Circle and just plan for a one day layover and a trip to the Blue Lagoon? I know I can check my luggage with one of the BL excursion trips.
Is there a safe place to check luggage for several days at Keflavik? Is it possible to get a shuttle to a hotel to dump the luggage and get a rental car from there? Do you have any other suggestions on how to get from a hotel to the BL and back to the hotel if we decide not to rent a car?
Can anyone recommend a budget hotel that has a no-frills restaurant nearby?
Any advice gratefully accepted. Thanks.
