Landing at 5:30 takes you out of the terminal at 6:20 am. The Blue Lagoon opens at 9 (10 after sept. 1st.) so you might want too start with a book at the airport, because almost anything in Reykjavík is closed until 10 or 11 (12 on sundays).

Activities starting around 8 am would be day tours out of the city (South shore - Golden Circle etc.) First three hours of your Reykjavik would be searching for something open (you'll almost only find bakeries I think), window shopping and looking at other tourists doing the very same thing.

Also, your flight is 5 hours AND the time difference is 4-5 hours so departure is around 7 or 8 pm right ? Otherwise your flight scedule just doesn't add up. Your biological clock will be at about 2 am once you go out from the airport.

I just did what you're thinking of doing. We landed at 6:30, got out of airport by 7:00ish, went to a hotel near the airport that has a breakfast "buffet" set up that allowed us to come eat, stayed there for a while, then drove to Blue Lagoon by 10:00. It was one of the highlights of the trip. You'll have plenty of time, even if you need to be back to airport that afternoon. If you want any of the spa services, book in advance. We tried and they were all booked up. Take whatever you'll need to get ready when you're done...they have hair dryers, towels and shampoo, but not much else. Take lotion! Your skin is a little dry after the lagoon. There is a nice restaurant there and a cafe. I would def recommend it.
