Off the beaten path in Reykjavik

I've already done about a day and a half in Reykjavik, but we're coming back to Iceland and will have a day before we launch into our driving trip. Any off the beaten path areas to explore? When we were there it seemed like all the tourists are channeled into a small area of downtown. Is there are an area just to walk around in and take in a regular neighborhood of the city?

Thanks!

Or any one of the nearby mountains. Helgafell, Mosfell, Úlfarsfell, Keilir, or even Esja.
