Hi, just wanting a bit of advice - we are coming to Iceland tomorrow staying in Rekyavik, mainly due to the fact that we have a 16yr old with us and thought he would prefer that. we also have a 7yr old with us and so are a little limited on travelling too far in one day so I am wondering what are the absolute must sees that aren't too far away from Rekyavik we do expect to have to do quite a bit of travelling just don't want to drive for 3 hrs or more to see one thing! we have hired a car and just want to get the most out of our trip and see as much as possible taking the ages of our children into account.

thanks so much in anticipation!

Having a 7 year old and a 16 year old the must see in Reykjavik is the Petting zoo. Their own site is only in icelandic but it has a few pictures (myndir) and perhaps google translate can help out with the text. This information site blow has the vital parts posted though.

The petting zoo and the family park are conjected so there is only one admission to both. I recommend a day pass for either child because there's plenty of rides to try out and the day pass gives unlimited access to all of them thoughout the day.

p.s. admission fee was lifted recently to 550 ISK and 750 ISK (about 0.50 USD increase from older price)

Out of the city there are the lava fields, water falls, geysers and if you do think your children can cope in a 5-6 hour drive to Jökulsárlón it will be worth it.

First thing I'd do is go to Volcano House and see the two films on Iceland's volcanoes and natural features. This will help yours and the children's understanding of the landscape. Next the Golden Circle. This is an all day trip but there is lots of getting out and walking to waterfalls etc. you can find out about this on this forum. The Petting Zoo as mentioned is worthwhile. Blue Lagoon - expensive but a good family activity. The glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón is 4-5 hours drive away and the same back. It is a 12-14 hour day. It is worth it but better to have an overnight stop. The other good trip is Westmann Islands. Aim for the 1:30pm car ferry but book before you leave Rejkavik. (I can't remember the website but you can google it)

To get the best from Iceland you must be prepared to travel. However there is so much to see you will be stopping all the time so although you may be out all day it won't be a straight 3 hours in the car. Jokulsarlon is well worth the trip but I would suggest you should make it a 2 day trip otherwise it's a very long day.

Obviously you will limit yourself by staying in Reykjavik all the time and you may backtrack over the same roads.

Enjoy
