Child-minder in Reykjavik?

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me with some advice.

I am due to run in the Reykjavik marathon this year (23rd August), I live in Brighton, England with my family.

I will be visiting Iceland with my daughter (14) and we plan to stay a week after the marathon to explore, we have never been to Iceland before.

I need to find a child-minder my daughter can stay with while I am running in the marathon. Does anyone know of any professional child-minders or an organisation I can get in touch with in Reykjavik that might help me? I have already been in touch with the Icelandic Tourist board and they could not offer any advice.

I ran in the Berlin marathon last year and organised a child-minder though a Berlin agency, my daughter had a lovely time with her while I ran in the race.

Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks.

This is one of the things that don't exist in Iceland in the form that you seek.

Icelandic 14 year olds roam free, go unescorted around town, use buses, bikes, skateboards, walk on their own, or with friends of similar age, and are unaccompanied by adults for hours. Their child-minder is a pre-paid cell phone, ipod and often a bus pass. Their activites are athetic rehersals, playing music in a garage band, attend summer courses amongst many other things.

My recommendation: see if you can inscribe her in a horse riding course or some other activity. She'll be in good company doing something fun, so that's she's not alone.

Hello

Thanks for your replies. I was beginning to suspect child-minding wasn't really a service in Iceland and for all the right reasons as you point out Unnar. My daughter is quite independent so being alone for 3/4 hours is not a problem for her - so long as she has her IPad and is safe. However I'll look into sorting out some kind of afternoon course in Reykjavik if I can - thanks Diane. My daughter is keen on art, design and crafts so I'll have a look around. If anyone has any pointers please let me know!

Thanks again.
