What should we do the Golden Circle or the South Shore?

We are coming on a cruise ship and will only be there for a day and a half. That means we only

have tie for one tour. Please let me know which one will give us the best feel for the country.

We figured the half day we would spend in the city. Thank you for any help you can give us.

What time of year and what are your actual hours ashore?

It is possible to do a half day tour of the Golden Circle so you might be able to fit both in depending on your timing (and still have a couple of hours in the city on the evening of your half day).

The classic of Iceland is the Golden Circle, as the Top One. It also involves less driving.

We will be there September 15th and 16th. We arrive at 9AM and will be there all night. On the 16th we leave at 1:00 so I' sure we will need to be back on board at 12. When I was looking at tours the South Coast tour lasts 11 hours. The Golden Circle tours are 5, 6, or 8 hour tours. Didn't know if we should take a tour

or drive or use other transportation. Obviously we want the best feel of the country for the small amount of time we have there. Thank you for your help. Lynn

Your ashore timings probably rule out doing both (unless you did a private tour maybe) but the Golden Circle is the popular tour as Diane says, and for a good reason as you will see waterfalls, geysir and the national park with its historical sights. The GC route is easy to drive, but if you do a organised tour you will also hear the history to the areas and take in the scenery instead of one of you having to watch the road. Time Tours do a full day that appears to tie in with ship arrivals - timetours.is/product/… or Bustravel and Sterna both offer half day Golden Circle tours (www.bustravel.is and www.sterna.is) that set off around lunchtime.

You would get a feel for the city in your half day (Reykjavik is quite compact and walkable if you are in reasonable fitness). In September, depending on weather and solar conditions, you could also think about a Northern Lights evening tour.

Thank you so much for your help. I will check out the tour companies you recommend and will plan on doing the Golden Circle on day one.

We are doing a night outing with the hope of seeing the Northern night. We planned on walking around

Reykjavic on our second day.

With the help of people like you, we get to see the best and get the most out of our stops.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

I would definitely take the Golden Circle. We were there on a cruise, too, and it was a busy full day, but we loved every minute of it. If possible get a tour that goes to the falls and national park first. Some people on our cruise took a ship's tour that went to the power plant and city areas first, and they got to the falls and springs near dark--not good.
