What to do in Reykjavik for New Year's Eve?

I will be visiting Reykjavik during New Year's Eve / New Year's Day, and I was wondering where I should be celebrating.

Is there a specific place everyone goes to celebrate? Looking for a place where there is a lot of action and can view the fireworks.

Are there any events planned for New Year's Day? If so, which one is a must see?

Any feedback on what to do during these two days would be appreciated. Thanks!

New Year’s eve is a big family night in Iceland. Most people gather in a family home have dinner and many go to the local bonfire in their home town. There are several bonfires around the city that night. After the bonfire people gather around the television to watch the yearly comic show on TV. Almost everyone watches it. It's done at around 11:30 p.m. and then most people go out and shoot fireworks until after midnight. There are LOT of fireworks all around, this is a webcam recording from last year www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/new-years/

After midnight people keep on celebrating in local parties at home or go to the night clubs and pubs in the city which are open until morning.

I would recommend you go out for a nice dinner and then visit one of the bonfires. At midnight there are few places which have a good view for the fireworks: Perlan, Hallgrimskirkja, Vatnsendi to name some.

On New year’s day the typical Icelander goes to a family dinner or some sort of feast and takes it easy for the day. Most of everything is closed during that day or has been the past years, but it seems to be changing with more tourists visiting the country at New Year's

You might want to go to the Blue Lagoon, or for a walk around the city........depending on how hard you partied the night before :) Mind you, Icelanders are party animals and at new year’s it's pretty wild.

Thank you!

Are the bonfire public or private?

Will you need to buy tickets in advanced to get into a nightclub on New Year's Eve?

All bonfires are public, no fee to go to a bonfire. Some events might need a pre-paid ticket but there should be planty of stuff going on for people to just wander into something really nice or fun.

If you get fireworks, party poppers, sparklers or such, remember to look for the volunteer Search And Rescue (SAR) logo http://www.landsbjorg.is/ to sponsor the SAR teams of Iceland.
