Is a flight into Hornafjordur Airport and drive west ideal?

My girlfriend and I have 5nights/6days in Iceland and would like to see both the south eastern side of the island as far east as Skaftafell and Snaefllenss peninsula (west). Instead of flying into the Reykjavik and driving east and then retracing out steps to go back west, we were wondering if it made sense to take a domestic flight into Hornafjordur airport, renting a car and then just going one-way west to east... seems like a more efficient route that would allow us to take it all in in 5/6 days. Any thoughts? How small are those planes? Still have nightmares about the 1978 single prop 4-seat cessna I took in New Zealand through stormy weather from Milford Sound to Queenstown.

Eagle air goes to Höfn. http://www.eagleair.is/schedule their scedule might chance at the end of the month, just be aware of that.

Their fleet is at www.eagleair.is/aircharter/our-aircraft

There are limited car rental options in Höfn without having them transport a car to the airport there specially (and expensively). One I know operates from there is Europcar, http://www.holdur.is/

Hi GatorNYC,

About "other thoughts". Well, 6 days / 5 nights should give you enough time to enjoy both the south coast until Höfn, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula, even if you drive it all.

The interesting thing about the south coast is that it has enough to keep you busy both ways - to & fro.

You can do it both on a self drive, or with two-day tours by minibus.

Enjoy!
