Would Valletta be the best base for us for first time visit?

Hi There,

Thinking of booking 2 weeks in Malta in September. We like to stay in a hotel with pool, & be near to old town/historical sites. Our evening entertainment requirements are simple- lovely meal, wine & a stroll through old streets! Would Valletta be the best base, or should we be looking at Sliema/St Julians? Not sure about Valletta in the evenings, & don't appear to be many hotels.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are not many hotels actually in Valletta , certainly not the sort with swimming pools but there are two just outside the city .

The Phonecia and the Excelsior are both 5 star and are not cheap to say the least.

I would suggest that you look at either Sliema or St Julians which are next to each other almost like one place.

Either have a great choice of hotels as well as plenty of bars , restaurants and shops .

Valletta is easily reached by omnibus in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Perhaps have a look at the Cavalieri Hotel which has a lovely position overlooking the pretty Spinola Bay in St Julians.

St Julians might be a better place if you want lots of restaurants and bars you also have several 5star hotel like Le Meridian which has a lovely spa and pool area or the Hilton. Some of the best restaurants like Barracuda and Peperoncino are also in St Julians with easy access to all Valetta has to offer.

If you're looking at 5* hotels the Phoenicia and Excelsior meet your requiirements. There are small, good restaurants in Valletta.

Valletta isn't far from Sliema/St Julians so you could go there a couple of times in the evenings by bus. The last bus from Valletta is at 11 pm . Then there are the Night buses so check the schedules arriva.com.mt

It would depend very much on what you're up to.

There is little accomodation around Valletta; however if you're looking at visiting attractions being in st Julians or Sliema would be quite good; you're only a short 20minutes bus trip away.

You could possibly use http://maltaattractionmap.com to see the places you would like to visit. You might notice the valletta area is quite full of attractions so a hotel not to far from where you want to visit would be ideal. However travel-times are quite short in Malta, so it shouldn't be a big problem to go around.

Two hotels that I come across during Valletta walkabouts are the 'Grand Harbour Hotel' and the 'British Hotel' - they are situated between the Upper Barrakka and the Lower Barrakka gardens with good views out over the harbour to the Three Cities/Kalkara/Bighi/Fort Riccasoli etc. Don't know about pools though, if they do have them, they must be on the roof.

Depending on your budget - The Excelsior or the Phoencia are very good hotels - a minutes walk from Valletta. Valletta can be quiet at night. The views form the Excelsior.

The best view forom Valletta is however obtained from the 3 star ( spartan but clean with no pool) British Hotel.. The dining/breakfast rooms have 180 degree views of the three cities and Grand Harbour. Alsa no pool there though.

Sleima/St Juians is busy all the time - and if you are going to hire a car make sure you find a hotel with parking as its a nighmare to park there without your own parking space.

I always suggest for a short break in Malta stay in Valletta but longer than a week Sliema. A good hotel in sliema if can get a good rate is The Palace Hotel, rooftop affinity pool but ask for a room up high with balcony. The views of Sliema & Valletta are good. Its not right on the busy Tower Rd but up a side road..close to supermarkets, easy access to either Sliema Ferries or Tower Rd for the busses. Free internet in the lobby. Otherwise try a find an apartment for 2 weeks www.holiday-rentals.co.uk or www.ownersdirect.co.uk click on Malta then what area you think eg Sliema or St Julians. egt with the first website we used Sliema Ref No. 96829 and St Julians REf No 11473 neither had a pool tho but good for transport, sea views..Sliema had fabulous views as shown in pictures & quieter rooms to sleep at night. Sept weather is still warm but with ocassional storms/heavy rain but over quickly.
