For me not just based on food but the whole atmosphere would be 1, zerri's on portomaso. 2, the avenue st julians and 3, peperoncino near balluta bay.

Others well worth a mention are villa brasseirie, great food but expensive, china house in st julians for the best chinese, bistro 24 inside the Radisson hotel st julians. Lots more as well.

My choices would be less expensive places but very popular with locals.

1) Il Barri restaurant in Mgarr. Great atmosphere and good food at reasonable prices.

2) Mgarr Farmers Bar in Zebbiegh. Locally grown food.

3) Ta` Gagin in Bahrija . Fantastic for rabbit.

There are plenty of other good places to eat without spending a fortune

As people say, there are many excellent restaurants in Malta, and if I am to pick from 'restaurants' and not eateries my choices are :-

Zest in St Julians, Pallazzo Preca in Valletta and Rampila in Valletta.

I could go on, but these are my favourites.

I forgot about zest shembo. So many good ones and this is def up there with the best.

I wouldn't doff my cap to any on spinola bay at the moment. Too much time being spent on looking good and not enough time spent on the menus or customer service just lately.

Graham, although I have travelled all over malta it has tended to be jumping on and off busses with not too much thought about where we eat so I can't really comment on restaurants outside sliema, valletta and st julians unfortunately. I have never visited mgarr either I'm afraid.

One of the nicest garlic rabbit dishes I had was in a place on republic street close to Mac Donalds but I would not be able to tell you what its called. Someone else might know what place I am on about. This was full of locals also. That's my problem.. I go in places and don't always take notice of what the place is called.

Bobthestag !!

You really must visit Mgarr and try the food in Il Barri.

The spare ribs are wonderfull . served with a huge enormous plate of chips.

Make the effort Bob and go.

You know what graham, I might just do that. Can't beat a good recommendation. Best advert any place can get.

It's not that far from qwara really. Probably best to jump in a taxi though unless Phil the bus advises otherwise.. taxi price would be about 10 euro I would imagine. Graham will advise you better as he stays in the qwara area regularly.

To get to Mgarr from the Qawra / Bugibba omnibus station you need to first get to Golden Bay and then catch the number 101 for a 10 / 15 minute ride to Mgarr.

The restaurant is right next to the church about 50 yards from the bus stop.
